I left SAlt recently so I can give you an anti recommendation. Joined because even though they were trots, they seemed to have good union struggles going on and no public abuse scandals like PSL. Unfortunately,

  • their meaningful campaigns (Amazon union, NALC reform effort) are national and my branch didn't want to participate in local struggle on its own.
  • public abuse scandal right after I joined. I don't think national leadership responded adequately and the members didn't eject leadership
  • ultimately the US section's position on the national question is wrong, and that poisons their analysis of Palestine. They think that Palestine will only be meaningfully freed with the cooperation of Israeli working class. IMO this leads to reprehensible policy positions which prevent them from meaningfully interfacing w the antiwar movement

If you have multiple orgs in your area, you can always just join for a couple months and investigate for yourself. Even though my time in SAlt didn't improve the world, I still got much better at talking to people about socialism irl, and working through my disagreements with them sharpened me politically. I think the reason the US left is so fucked up and weak is that the working class in general isn't organized, and a strong left movement grows out of mass class consciousness. There were plenty of social democratic orgs all over pre-revolutionary Russia; where there was no worker struggle they withered away and where there was worker struggle they thrived. When you talk to socialists, the difference between organizers with union experience and activists without it is palpable. With historically low unionization it's a question of what is the least-bad org to join.

wtf I thought he was a Marxist this sucks

idk about state support. but yeah without bringing socialism in, there's nothing that makes unions directly fight for the working class as a whole, just for the interests of that segment of it. This strike could have had wider political implications, e.g. Maersk was one of the employers. The most extreme example is cop "unions" that actively fuck over the working class, but lots of unions sacrifice the rest of the class a little bit. For instance working people need public transit, Chicago's transit system has had a big operator shortage for several years, but the union made it really difficult to get a job as an operator (have to first do 1 year in an essentially unrelated menial role with few openings). Or you get Hoffa teamsters

4% yearly raise after inflation. It's better than nothing, but I think the right thing to do is strike until you win a contract with all your demands. Helps prevent union leadership from becoming collaborationist. I don't know ILA internal politics

so they've stopped the strike in exchange for a promise of a contract next year? and the promised contract is an 8% yearly raise? idk about this one

about $75k of mining rigs actually. 66kW is a lot of heat to dissipate

nobody who'd want to put 551 amps through jumper wire has access to a 551 amp source

i like greyskull LP and got further than you on it. are you eating enough?

lol another PimEyes frontend. None of this tech is new but it's gotten a lot easier for the amateur. The technically neat thing is LLMs to do the brute work of parsing the scraped whitepages or whatever. Here's the students' writeup

How to Remove Your Information

Fortunately, it is possible to erase yourself from data sources like Pimeyes and FastPeopleSearch. We are outlining the steps below so that you and those you care about can protect themselves.

  1. Removal from Reverse Face Search Engines:
The major, most accurate reverse face search engines, Pimeyes and Facecheck.id, offer free services to remove yourself.
  1. Removal from People Search Engines
Most people don’t realize that from just a name, one can often identify the person’s home address, phone number, and relatives’ names. We collected the opt out links to major people search engines below:
  1. Preventing Identity Theft from SSN data dump leaks
Most of the damage that can be done with an SSN are financial. The main way to protect yourself is adding 2FA to important logins and freezing your credit below:

been thinking about DE, does anyone know if it runs well on Linux?

Why don't you start by leaving the bottles out in the sun? UV light accelerates decomposition. I've also read that heat and elemental selenium will destroy nicotine.

You could also add an acid to precipitate into nicotine salt, which might be easier to deal with. Pick an acid such that the resulting salt is insoluble in whatever the carrier liquid is (water? glycerol?). Then you have solid waste.

Thanks Mohammed and thanks to your friend. I want to tell him I'm so sorry that the American left has so far failed in our mission to organize the people. Although both our political parties support Israel, polls show that most Americans want to stop. From underneath our government the hearts of the people are with you.

And I want to ask him: What do you think about political organizations within Gaza? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Hamas, the PFLP, the various PLO groups; armed struggle and mass struggle. What is working, what is not? What is popular, what is unpopular? Are most people politically engaged or is it too hard because of Israel's attacks?

They're still in Kurian's office, still streaming, and starting to get major media coverage: WaPo Wired

In my opinion this is one of the most important labor developments in the US in a while. Internationally politicized worker organization in the belly of the beast by traditionally un-unionizable PMCs.

Bulk tofu online? (hexbear.net)

Where do I find cheap firm tofu online? Costco used to be $1.25 a block for the good stuff but now is like $1.60 for less than a pound of "firm" that crumbles if you look at it funny. Every other local store has even worse prices, even Chinatown. I am ready to just give up and buy 40 pounds online or something. I eat a block of tofu for dinner most days (or I would, if it was cheap and good again).

Posting here instead of /c/chicago since it's pretty dead. They've introduced an ordinance that would ban sales of new fur (not leather, not thrifting, but still):

https://chicago.councilmatic.org/legislation/o2023-0002983/

Apparently Gardiner said today he's going to co-sponsor this, along with some others not yet listed. Why the FUCK are Raylo and Gardiner suddenly champions of animal rights? It seems like it should be easier to get the succdems and progressives on board; I'm gonna ask mine tomorrow.
