Late-stage capitalism ready to collapse on itself. When your production lines are perfectly efficient, no one make money but the top.

Then at some point, consumption will come to a halt. Robots will produce goods that nearly no one can afford, small service business will be bankrupted. And government will be powerless as billionaires don't pay taxes but they're the last class on Earth actually making money.

This is just an early sign. The whole system is ready to crash.

1.No. Most of the time they just reduce their power level, without shutting down completely. This is not a technical limitation of the plant. It's to avoid heating too much the water locally, that would impact wildlife. But granted it will only get worse over time.

2.All water boiling based PP will have issues under extreme heat. Their efficiency depends on a difference of temperature with the outside. That's valid for nuclear, gas and coal plants.

3.I'm not saying nuclear is the best ever solution. What I'm saying is given the urgency of climate change, shutting down nuke while installing more coal was absolutely criminal. If you wanted to get rid of nuclear, you should still have started by replacing coal and gas with renewable sources before replacing nuclear with renewable.

4.I'm pissed by that decision, but Germany is not even a bad actor compared to other countries.

They will most likely conclude libs plot to kill them. Might include doctors.

This data may make them even worse.

Regardless how you see it, keeping nuclear plants running would have considerably reduced the need for coal and gas, which should be the damn absolute priority.

One actually infuriating thing is, the EU set targets and penalties over installed renewable capacity, not over emissions. So while Germany is generating considerably more emissions that most of western Europe, they were the "good citizen", but France had to pay penalties for not having installed enough renewables.

You can see how much sense it makes at any time:

https://app.electricitymaps.com/map/live/fifteen_minutes

That's what I call a cynical policy written by people who want to score points but don't give a flying fuck about climate.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

Climate not being a priority is the ground for leaders to support coal and overall inaction.

Same as in France, where Macron said (again) that he couldn't possibly anticipate a historical canicule event, even though there was one in 2003, and scientists and activists have been warning that France was warming up at least twice faster than the rest of the world.

Same in Canada where Carney rescinded almost all climate policies in favor of oil business.

It's time to recognize our collective responsibility here: we elect ignorant idiots!

If you're the sole user of your VPS, all the sites you visit can identify you based on your IP only. Behind a VPN, they have to rely on cookies, fingerprinting, etc. (of course assuming you don't just login...).

Some VPN suppliers have a no log policy and have been audited to confirm they had indeed no log.

Mullvad was audited multiple times and the audits confirmed no log and no information leak. They don't even store customers info: you have a customer number, and you'd better not lose it. Sure if you pay by credit card, they can trace you back.

They're transparent about issues they face (2 years ago they reported a weakness allowing websites to identify the same browser switching outgoing servers) and the fix they use.

So yes, they are one of the very very few services I trust.

VPS supplier are just as likely as any other company to sell, leak or disclose on request your information.

1 cent for that cause was already too much!

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Because where I go on Internet is not the business of my ISP, and it's not data I want them to store and sell to whoever will pay for it? I am now behind a VPN 100% of the time.

Based on my virtual location, YT doesn't force me to connect to watch videos (in some parts of the world, they seem to do!), and I won't be stopped by age verification crap in my country.

At 20, you're a democrat because you have dreams and hopes, but being young and poor, you depend on the system's generosity to get successful.

At 30, you are a Republican, because you start having a life of comfort, and even if you refuse to admit it, you know well your comfort relies on some other people working hard in miserable conditions, but you really like your comfort, and you rationalize this with "economic growth will lift everyone from poverty" even though you really want some people to do menial tasks for you, and for cheap, and you want everything to be cheap, so people producing goods and delivering services can't be paid too much, and can't have it too easy, or they'll quit and you'll lose your benefits!

At 40, you're a libertarian because you finally made peace with the idea that there will be poor, there will be rich, it is what it is, but now you want your voice level to match your bank account. Why would you pay more taxes (in absolute) than most and at the same time let these folks decide what to do with the money?? You'll manage the money you want to give to the community, and it will only go to the charities and projects that deserve your generosity. That way things are much fairer.
You didn't totally forget about the you at 20, but you look at your kid, and decide we don't need free education or some shit, because low/no taxes mean you can save enough to pay for their education. And for the poor, well: you were poor at 20, so they should just take example on you and work hard to get out of poverty!

If you recognize yourself in this, know that at all ages, you were probably a PoS, but only with the age did you reveal your true colors!

I wish I was that optimistic, but I lived through the infamous Win ME, 2k, 7, 8, 10 now 11, and every time we thought "this time they're toast! It's the time of Linux!" and it didn't happen.

Maybe this time? Or maybe not...

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

This! I'm probably ready to pay a bit more to NOT be under constant surveillance by a car maker!

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 22 points 5 days ago

Their intent was to block third party app, not GOS specifically. GOS not working is a side effect.

Why blocking third party? As said below: to force the use of privacy invasive apps, and collect more data.

Now they will change course only if they suffer from a sufficient backlash. And that needs to be painful enough to deter other car makers from doing the same.

I can't insist enough on how bad this is. Putting at risk all messenging systems, it would be only a matter of time before a malevolent actor get the keys and get all kind of personal and sensitive data.

Quels opérateurs laissent encore leurs clients apporter leur téléphone sans restriction autre que les capacités de l'appareil?

I'm using Duolingo to improve my Mandarin and learn to read, and to learn Spanish.

Does anyone have some recommendations of texts for learners to practice reading?

My wife suggested me to use kids books, but I'd like a more motivating content than teddy bear's adventures...

So it's been a while now since the leaderboard's challenge is Match Madness every day except on Saturday, when it's the Ramp Up.

I don't know if it's just me but that's getting me pretty disengaged. I quickly hit my limit on the Match Madness, then it has no interest to me.

Previously, I would use these challenges on a daily basis, as a way to review past lessons. Damned, I would use them over and over to score high in the leaderboard too.

Now I've completely lost interest in the leaderboard, but worse: I'm wondering if I'm moving back by lack of practice on past lessons vocabulary and grammar.

I don't feel like going through some past lessons and pick some randomly. How do you make sure you do pick randomly?

Am I the only one who thinks that "all Match Madness" thing is a regression?
