June 22nd, 2025: It Takes Two

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. - Silksmoke Synthetic
  • Razor: Chiseled Face - Titanium Legacy Razor
  • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (2)
  • Lather: Mike's Natural Soaps - Honey & Grapefruit - Soap
  • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Grapefruit - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Ginger's Garden - Unscented (+menthol) - Balm
  • Fragrance: Stirling - Arkadia - EdT

$discord

Theme: Mike's Honey & Grapefruit is scented with grapefruit essential oil and honey.

Daily challenge: I'm wiped after this weekend and don't have the energy to battle rap. $selfcare is recognizing when you just don't have the energy.

$FOF - Arkadia, a dupe of Terre d'Hermes, fit naturally with this soap and splash. The throughline is grapefruit, with orange, florals, and cedar popping through in the dry down. It's a very nice progression for a sunny summer day.

June 21st, 2025: K.I.S.S.

  • Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations "Nebulagance" - TurnNShave Quartermoon 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: RazoRock - Game Changer .76-P
  • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (3)
  • Lather: Martin de Candre - Rose - Soap
  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Lavender - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: Creed - Selection Verte - EdT

Daily theme: Rose is a single note scent.

Challenge: I did not time my lather, so probably no challenge points for me. But I promise I lathered so so fast.

$selfcare for me today was sleeping in and having a slow morning reading with a cup of coffee in the sun.

June 20th, 2025: The Clash

  • Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations "Nebulagance" - TurnNShave Quartermoon 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: RazoRock - Game Changer .76-P
  • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (2)
  • Lather: Zingari Man - The Master - Soap
  • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Gravefruit II - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented - Balm
  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Ubrique - EdP

$discord

Theme: None of these scents make sense together. The spicy barbershop of The Master clashed with the complex citrus in Grave Fruit II. Then the spicy leather of Ubrique barges in and continues the confusing progression.

All great scents, but they don’t really work together naturally.

Dsily challenge: I think the picture works nicely. Props to my lovely wife for the assist.

$selfcare - I spent the day hanging out with old friends, swimming in the Russian River, and drinking good wine. My self care cup feels full.

  • Razor: RazoRock - Game Changer .76-P
  • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (1)
  • Lather: Noble Otter - Lonestar - Soap
  • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Lonestar - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented - Balm
  • Fragrance: Chiseled Face - Summer Storm - EdP

$discord

Theme: Lonestar reminds me of freedom because it brings me back to the wide open plains of New Mexico. There's nothing quite like the sense of freedom you get when it feels like you have the desert to yourself. I miss living there dearly.

Daily challenge: I was unable to get a picture or video because I'm squeezing a shave in while at a rental cabin with friends. I did shave without a mirror, and it was not as bad as I expected, though it felt weird. Pretty good results overall, though.

$SELFCARE - Took a long weekend this weekend to spend some time with friends I don't get to see often.

$FOF - The sage, hay, and grass in Lonestar move naturally into the dirt, ozone, and petrichor in Summer Storm. It felt like getting caught in an afternoon thunderstorm in the desert. Just lovely.

After a shitty pharmacy shave cream shave for LG, I decided to try out this new Australian sheep tallow soap to finish the job.

Outback is scented with sandalwood, patchouli, bergamot, and cedarwood. I mostly get the cedarwood and sandalwood. It's fairly mild but develops nicely when lathered.

The soap performed excellently. Easy to lather, took as much water as I wanted to give it, and great slickness (primary and residual). I'm looking forward to more folks getting to try this out!

  • Razor: EldrormR Industries - MM24 $MODERNGEM
  • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (8)
  • Lather: Walgreens - "Sandalwood" - Cream
  • Post Shave: Proctor & Gamble - Old Spice - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented - Balm
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz - 4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser - EdC

$discord

Theme: This shave cream and aftershave are both sold in a pharmacy local to me. The shave cream is terrible , I’ll probably throw it away before the next LG. I can’t believe people shave with this shit every day.

Challenge: Absolutely no energy for this today. Work has been way too much this week.

$FOF - Old Spice into 4711 is a really nice progression. The carnation, lemon, and jasmine from the splash blend nicely with the citrus in 4711. My only gripe is that I wish the scent of 4711 lasted longer. I swear it's pretty much completely gone after 15-20 minutes.

My $SELFCARE today was just getting a shave in. I am so exhausted, but at least tomorrow is a half day then we're spending the weekend at a rental cabin with some high school friends. I'm very much looking forward to that.

June 17th, 2025: Don't have a Cow, Man!

  • Brush: Chisel & Hound "Spice Lily" - TurnNShave Tuxedo 26mm Synthetic $ALLNATURAL
  • Razor: Gillette - Rocket HD $RUSTYBUTTRUSTY
  • Razor: Gillette - Super Speed Black Tip
  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (1)
  • Lather: Southern Witchcrafts - Grave Fruit - Soap
  • Post Shave: Saponificio Varesino - Cubebe - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented - Balm
  • Fragrance: Catie’s Bubbles - Crangère - EdP

$discord

Theme: All of my software for today's shave is vegan. SW gave a great lather as always, I'm grateful to own a few tubs of their soap.

Challenge: For today's shave, I compared my Gillette Super Speed Black Tip with my English-made Gillette Rocket HD. I used the Rocket HD on the right side of my face and the Black Tip on the left. Three passes on either side, and both razors had a new Personna Lab Blue blade.

Tag justifications:

$ALLNATURAL - My C&H handle has an ivory ferrule.

$RUSTYBUTTRUSTY - My Rocket HD was visible plating wear and patina.

These two razors have basically the same (brass) head. However, my Black Tip's handle is made out of aluminum and plastic, while the HD's is plated brass, so the main difference between the two is weight and balance. Overall, I got a closer and more comfortable shave today with the Rocket HD. The greater weight, and in particular the heavier handle, both give the razor a more confident feel. That said, both razors performed very well.

$SELFCARE - Today I went for a run before work, took a full hour for lunch, and spent some quiet time reading a book and hanging with our cats. It can often feel hard to find time to carve out for myself during the day, but I'm always glad when I do.

$FOF - Grave Fruit is a complex scent. The notes I could find list Yuzu, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Cedar, Green Mango, Vetiver, Freesia, Aldehydes, Ho Wood, Sandalwood, Elemi, Frankincense, Pear, Costus Root, and Sambac. 15 scent notes! I would say that I mostly pick up on the grapefruit, bergamot, and pear while using this. Cubebe brought a nice light floral note that helped to soften the citrus, and Crangere finished the progression with a sharp shock of cranberry that quickly fades into a warm, woody fougere.

I expected these scents to work well together, but was surprised by just how well they meshed. I'll have to revisit this another day.

So you actually have no idea which is which?

That’s hilarious. I hope one day you find out. 😄

June 16th, 2025: Where's the Beef?

  • Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations "Nebulagance" - TurnNShave Quartermoon 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: RazoRock - Game Changer .76-P $CNC
  • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (5)
  • Lather: Declaration Grooming - Delta-V - Soap
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Arkadia - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: GLHF Workshop - Atriox - EdT

$discord

Theme: I used Declaration Grooming's Delta-V soap in the Milksteak base, which includes bison tallow as one of its ingredients.

Challenge: After a very busy and stressful Monday, I did not have it in me to mess around with reversing my shave routine. I just needed a good, relaxing, and comfortable shave. $SELFCARE

$FOF - Atriox is a dupe of Brut by Faberge. A soft, smooth and, dare I say, elegant barbershop-y scent, it nicely rounded out the bright grapefruit and orange in Arkadia. It's a classic scent for a reason. Thanks for the bottle u/pridetwo!

June 15th, 2025: Father's Day

  • Brush: Omega - 10048 28mm Boar
  • Razor: GEM - Micromatic Open Comb
  • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (7)
  • Lather: Proraso - Red - Soap
  • Post Shave: Mennen - Skin Bracer - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: Le Labo - Oud 27 - EdP

Theme: All of these companies (except the frag) were established before I was born (late 80’s).

Challenge: Unfortunately there was no chance for me to do extra for my shave today. Though, personally, I'd argue that the quality shave and excellent scents from this afternoon were $selfcare enough to justify calling it a spa day.

$FOF - Oud 27, which was an anniversary gift from my wife, is a real stanky funky oud scent. It plays really nicely with the sandalwood in Proraso Red and the green/powder vibe of Skin Bracer. I love the progression of this scent. It starts super animalic and funky and fades into a lovely warm spiciness. I may have to grab a full bottle of the frag when this decant is finished.

GTB is my lowest tub.

Also my lowest splash, though Deep Blue Sea is really close.

Individuel works surprisingly well with GTB. I think it’s the cedar from GTB blending nicely with the orange blossom and musk.

Took it easy today and helped my wife and friends clean up after our party last night. We then got breakfast sandwiches and had an impromptu sunny brunch picnic in the park by our building. It was a lovely start to the weekend, and some great $selfcare.

June 13th, 2025: Frugal Friday

  • Brush: Menesia - Badger Shaving Brush for Men Badger $WEDONTNEEDNOSTINKINGBADGERS $RUNT
  • Razor: TriDE Safety Razor - 3D-printed red $PLASTIC
  • Blade: Shark Super Chrome (1)
  • Lather: Arko - Arko - Soap
  • Post Shave: Stetson - Cooling Moisture - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented - Balm
  • Fragrance: Alvarez Gomez - Agua de Colonia Concentrada - EdC

$discord

Theme justification: Arko is the cheapest lather in my den by a decent margin. It's currently about $1.24 per shave stick if you buy a box of 12.

Daily challenge: Everything else in this shave is also the cheapest that I own:

This brush was $4 on Amazon and is the worst brush I've ever used. I almost don't believe it's badger. Full disclosure that I stole bmac's picture of the Amazon listing, it seems their badger brush option isn't currently available.

I usually kind of like the scent of Arko, but all I smelled during this shave was the stink of shitty animal hair. I also probably lost 25 hairs from the brush during the shave. I'm very tempted to throw this away, but I might keep it around just for next year's LG.

Stetson Cooling Moisture is the cheapest bottle of aftershave I own. I got it for $7.20 for 3.4 oz. of splash. It's very slightly mentholated, and likely full of shit that I don't want on my face all the time, but it's a classic scent and is pretty mild on the skin.

And finally, the razor is 3d-printed and cost u/josiguuh about $0.18 to make.

$FOF - Agua de Colonia Concentrada actually works really nicely with the lemon scent from Arko. The scent is super pleasant for the 20-30 minutes that it lasts.

It's also the least expensive fragrance that I own, at about $20 a bottle.

$SELFCARE - I was supposed to run today, but rested instead to give my back a chance to heal after tweaking it yesterday. I'm also off to a solstice party this evening with a bunch of our local friends. It should be a nice opportunity to unwind, catch up, and celebrate one of the longest days of the year.

Have a great weekend y'all!

$ROTY

I stumbled across this vintage Colgate shave stick ad and thought some here might also get a kick out of it.

“The Conversion of Mr. Prejudice”

They had built up a bit of soap residue. Now they’re cleaner.

I had some exciting stuff arrive this morning and over the weekend!

First up, a nice Stirling haul:
Stirling Haul

This is the 31mm Zenith boar brush, the same that was used for the subreddit's prior "Moar Boar" group buy. The handle feels great in hand, and the knot seems just as nice as my other Zenith boar. My only complaint is that the Zenith and Stirling logos are pretty far off-level with the base of the handle. Not the end of the world, but it's unfortunate.

Christmas Eve in a bath soap is a great scent. I'm looking forward to trying it and Frankincense & Myrrh in shave soap format.

Deep Blue Sea aftershave is a re-stock. I love it with a bit of menthol.

The bonus was a sample of Haverford bath soap. I've previously used the shave soap/splash/frag, so this sample is most welcome. It's such a winning scent, especially for this time of year.

Next, some new hardware:
New Razors

From left to right:

  • 1940's GEM Clog-Pruf Single Edge Razor
  • Chiseled Face Titanium Legacy Razor
  • RazoRock Game Changer with .68 and .76 plates and the "Bulldog" handle

The Clog-Pruf seems in quite good condition for its age and price (~$15 shipped). I'm still waiting on some GEM blades and want to clean it up just a bit before trying it out.

The CF TI Legacy razor is a real indulgence, but it's a belated birthday gift from my wife, and we got a good deal from a kind soul on Discord. I've shaved with this razor a few times since I got it this weekend and it's quickly vaulted to the top of my list. If I had to pick a desert island razor right now, this is very likely the one I would pick. Likely, I'm still deep in the honeymoon phase, but this is truly an outstanding razor.

I got a good deal on the Game Changer on the zaar before I ordered the CF Legacy. It's a great shaver, I like how low profile the head is (very easy to shave under the nose), and the stainless steel construction is most definitely a step up from my Rockwell 6C. This will probably take the 6C's place in my collection.

And finally, a Barrister and Mann score:
Paganini's Violin soap and aftershave splash

I've wanted to try this scent since I first read about it, so when I saw the set for a decent deal on the zaar I snatched it up.

Clean, mild, and strangely complex. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know this fragrance.

I had the day off today, so I hacked together a port of the SOTD emacs plugin that @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social uses.

It's still a pretty rough implementation, but I wanted to share the repository here in case others who use Neovim might want to help me kick the tires. I'm fully aware that this is a niche within a niche, but you miss 100% of the shots you don't take!

I know there's some cleanup that needs to happen, and the config file format could use a bit more thought, but it works well enough for now. If anyone feels compelled to use it I'd welcome any feedback either here or on the repo itself.

The code is hosted on GitHub here.

I usually face lather and get consistently good results at this point.

However, when I get a .5 oz. or less sample I'll smush the soap down into a thin, even layer using one of those collapsible slow-feed pet bowls. Every time I get a foamy bullshit lather.

I'm unsure how to get an equally wet and slick lather with the bowl. Do I just need to keep adding water? Move to the face sooner? Give up and grow a beard?
