For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Emilia Perez (2024), a Mexican LGBT musical about a drug-cartel boss who wants to retire and transition into living as a woman. A corrupt lawyer helps her facilitate this goal, and a whole lot of singing and dancing follows from there. Despite receiving 13 Oscar nominations, the film currently sits at an abysmal 2.3 average user score on Letterboxd. Why the discrepancy? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Jacques Audiard, the French guy behind the prison gangster film A Prophet (2009), which we previously watched.

Next is Scream 2 (1997), Wes Craven’s sequel to his smash-hit slasher from the year before. Sydney’s struggle against Ghostman has now been adapted into a major motion picture, Stab, and a new Ghostface starts to mimic the events depicted in the film. Yes, they added an extra meta-layer this time. Looks pretty neat.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Ghostlight (2024), a dramedy about a dad who copes with the recent loss of his son by entering a theatre troupe alongside his estranged daughter, in which his onstage role begins to mirror his personal struggles. What if theatre was therapy? Apparently, this is a heartwarmer. One of the best-reviewed movies of 2024, and a frequent entry on critics’ end-of-year top 10 lists. This is the best-regarded work to date of directors Alex Thompson and Kelly O’Sullivan, who are not known for much else otherwise.

Next up is Basic Sanitation: The Movie (2007), a Brazilian mockumentary about a group of filmmakers who decide to call attention to their local sewage systems’ dire need for federal funding by using money from a film grant to create a sci-fi movie about a sewer monster. Hilarity ensues. Director Jorge Furtado specializes in this flavor of light comedy, and this is the best-regarded of them. One of the highest-rated Brazilian films on Letterboxd.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 13 through 18 of the fifth part, Golden Wind. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Anomalisa (2015), a stop-motion psychological drama-comedy-romance from renowned auteur Charlie Kaufman, the director of Synecdoche New York (2008) and I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), which we previously watched; he also wrote Being John Malkovich (1999), which we did not watch, and Adaptation (2002), which we did. This one follows a middle-aged British man (played by David Thewlis) who has a rare mental disorder that causes him to perceive everyone as identical, except for a woman he meets, causing him to become quickly infatuated with her. All of the characters are puppets. Looks pretty neat. Great reviews for this one, too.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Death by Hanging (1968), a satirical Japanese crime procedural about the Japanese state deciding what to do after a murderer survives a hanging. The cops and politicians show themselves to be, by turns, incompetent, naive, out-of-touch, sadistic, insensitive, and fascistic as they try to make sense of the failed execution and debate whether they should just kill the condemned anyway. This is arguably the magnum opus of director Nagisa Oshima, who is otherwise best-known for the erotic drama In the Realm of the Senses (1970), which we have not watched. This is considered one of the best Japanese films of the 1960s.

After that is 20th Century Women (2016), a dramedy about a single mom (Annette Bening) in the 1970s who recruits two other women (Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig) to help raise her distant teenage son, under the logic that they can connect o him better than she can. Drama and comedy and heartwarming character bonds follow. Director is Mike Mills, whose dude-and-kid bonding film C’mon C’mon (2021). which we previously watched, and this sounds like it’s in the same vein. Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is The Skin I Live In (2011), a Spanish horror movie about a mad scientist / plastic surgeon, played by Antonio Banderas, who recruits a young woman as a test subject for his newly-invented artificial skin treatment. He becomes obsessed with her as he tries to prevent the outer world from preventing him from perfectly transplanting the woman’s face. It takes many cues from the classic French horror Eyes Without a Face (1960), which we previously watched. Director is renowned auteur Pedro Almodovar, whose films Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) and All About My Mother (1999) have previously appeared on Hextube. Critics and audiences both rave about this one, so we'll watch it.

After that is Monsters University (2013), Pixar’s prequel to Monsters Inc. (2001). This one follows the adventures of Mike and Sully in their college days, where they meet and get up to all sorts of antics as they learn to be professional kid-scarers. At first, they can’t stand each other, but maybe they have more in common than meets the eye? Who knows. Good reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is When Evil Lurks (2023), an Argentinian horror film about a pair of brothers who find a man possessed by a demon. They dispose of his body, only for the demon to start possessing others around town. Oh no! Time to get the hell out. A whole lot of blood and gore follow. This is the best-known and best-reviewed work to date of director Demian Rugna. One of the most-viewed Spanish-language films on Letterboxd.

Next is Marie Antoinette (2006), Sofia Coppola’s biopic of the doomed 18th-century French queen of the same name (here played by Kirsten Dunst), spiced up with various anachronisms, such as modern slang and 2000s-era music. Think A Knight’s Tale (2001), but in eighteenth-century France, and with a queen who ends up getting her head chopped off. Yes, she will tell the starving peasants to eat cake at some point. Looks pretty neat.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Naked (1993), often considered the magnum opus of renowned British auteur Mike Leigh, whose drama Another Year (2010) we previously watched. It follows an aimless scumbag (played by David Thewlis) who wanders the streets of London at night and gets up to various sociopathic and sometimes darkly-humorous antics. Often compared to the likes of Joker (2019), American Psycho (2000), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Taxi Driver (1976), and the like. God Damn the UKKK: The Movie. Rave reviews for this pretty much everywhere.

Next up is Joint Security Area (2000), a political thriller from Park Chan-wook, whose works we have watched several times on Hextube (The Handmaiden [2016], Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance [2002], Lady Vengeance [2005], Decision to Leave [2022].) After two DPRK soldiers are shot in the DMZ at the border of the Korean occupation zone, a Swiss mediator arrives to investigate the case, and two conflicting accounts arise: one from the DPRK, and one from occupied Korea. Which one will be correct? Hope it doesn’t lib out. At any rate, this is considered one of Park’s best films, so let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Orpheus (1950), a French dreamlike mythological fantasy about a Parisian poet who gets into a brawl and kills a man in a café. A mysterious woman then takes him and the corpse in her car to the underworld, and the poet steals the car and escapes. But uh-oh, he still can’t get away, and his hapless wife is lured into hell herself. This film is a noted influence on David Lynch’s style, particularly as realized in Twin Peaks, so it seems a suitable choice for tonight. Director is Jean Cocteau, whose film Beauty and the Beast (1946) we previously watched.

After that is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), the prequel film to David Lynch’s legendary TV series, Twin Peaks. Yep, we’re just gonna jump straight into it from here. The film follows two plots: the first centers on Agent Cooper in his weird adventures in another spooky town, Deer Meadow, as he tries to solve the disappearance of a fellow FBI agent. The second concerns Laura Palmer in the days leading up to her murder, which kicks off the plot of the TV series. Although it flopped in its release, it is now considered one of the best films of the 1990s, and on par with Lynch’s best works. Let’s watch.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), a drama about Tom (played by Matt Damon), a sociopathic young man and consummate liar who can effortlessly make up fake identities and ingratiate himself with anyone. He is hired by a Usian business mogul to go overseas to retrieve his dilettante son, and a web of intrigue, lies, and romance follows from there. Director is Anthony Minghella, who is otherwise best-known for The English Patient (1996); this is one of his best-regarded films.

After that is Pusher II (1996), a Danish gangster thriller and sequel to Pusher (1996), which we watched last week. Director is Nicolas Winding Refn, the auteur behind Drive (2011) and Bronson (2008), among others. A drug dealer (played by Mads Mikkelsen) emerges from prison, only to find himself drowning in debt to the local mob kingpin. In addition to that, he finds out he’s a dad. Chaos ensues, sometimes in darkly-humorous fashion. Reviews are better for this one than the original, and it is considered one of Refn’s best films.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Platform (2019), a Spanish thriller about a gigantic vertical prison that lowers food down to the inmates, who live on platforms at varying elevations. The inmates higher up get more food, and the ones lower down starve. Class consciousness begins to brew among the lower denizens, and they begin a rebellion. Pretty much Snowpiercer (2013), but vertical. Critics call it communist propaganda, which is fine by me. It is the only notable work to date of director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia; he is a one-hit wonder so far.

Next is The Parent Trap (1998), a family comedy starring Lindsay Lohan as a pair of identical twins reunited at a summer camp after a long separation due to their parents’ divorce. Once they learn the truth, they switch places and plot for their parents to get back together. This movie is really popular on Letterboxd for some reason. Okay, we’ll check it out. Director Nancy Meyers has a bunch of rom-coms to her name, including The Holiday (2006) and What Women Want (2000).

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Manjummel Boys (2024), an Indian adventure film about a group of friends who go spelunking in a dangerous cave illegally; one of them falls into a put, and the other dudes have to rock in order to rescue him. They deal with numerous obstacles, including harassment from the worse-than-useless police, along the way. This will be the first Malayalam movie we have watched. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Chidambaram to date.

Next up is Sorry We Missed You (2019), a British drama from the maestro of working-class struggle himself, Ken Loach, the guy behind Kes (1969), The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006), and I Daniel Blake (2016), all of which we previously watched. A man whose family has fallen on hard times since the 2008 financial crash finds a new job opportunity as a delivery driver; things start looking up, but this is the UK we’re talking about, so of course everything goes to shit anyway as pressures from his work and family life threaten to undo his newfound financial independence. God Damn Capitalism: The Movie. This is considered one of Loach’s best films, so let’s check it out.
