This is the weekly discussion thread for all things loosely related to football that may not warrant its own post.

Hello everyone,

There has been some discussions lately about the moderation of some LW communities (see !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com for details)

Which made me think that we currently don't have any active LW mod, the only remaining one being @UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev

So why would we not consider moving this community to another instance?

For people curious why moving the community to another instance would be beneficial:

  • LW has a 7-days delay with instances like aussie.zone (https://feddit.uk/post/18336398)
  • Having most of the instances on LW give a lot of power to the LW admins and mods, while spreading them out could be more ideal from a power distribution perspective
  • Previous communities have already migrated successfully, like !casualconversation@lemmy.world

Instances option

Alternatively, https://lemmy.zip/ is very well run

They regularly post very detailed updates on !home@lemmy.zip such as this one: https://lemmy.zip/post/27236300

They also offer very detailed information on those pages:

LiveThreadBot is now live (programming.dev)
submitted 3 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) by UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev to c/football@lemmy.world

Update: To add or remove women's game's, you now need to add -w to the command. E.g. -football -w Barcelona - Liverpool or -remove -football -w Barcelona - Liverpool This is due to edge cases where men's and women's team share name and play against the same opponent on the same day. Women's match thread will also be marked with [Women's game] in the title.

As some of you may have seen, the community now has a match thread bot to help with automating creation and updating match threads.

The bot takes a request in the format -football football@lemmy.world Barcelona - Real Madrid and will look up to 6 days ahead for an upcoming match and add it to a queue. ~15 minutes before kick off it will make a post that it will continuously update with available score, stats and commentary.

To make a request you can either tag the bot or reply to one of the bot's comments. See the comments for an interaction example.

The bot will work in any community federated with lemmy.world so if you want to create a live thread in e.g. c/gunners you could make a request like this -football gunners@lemmy.world Arsenal - Tottenham Hotspur

Do note that the bot requires approval from a mod or admin to post in a community. So unless you're a mod/admin, you'll need to ask them to approve the bot via -mod_action whitelist gunners@lemmy.world or become a trusted user that can bypass the block -mod_action trust username@instance.com gunners@lemmy.world

For a more detailed and technical overview of the bot's capabilities, please check the readme in the gitlab repo: https://gitlab.com/UlrikHD/lemmy-match-thread-bot

So the hearing has finished but they're not announcing the result until march? That's not dodgy at all!

Zlatan Ibrahimović: Playing for a club like Bayern Munich would certainly not have been bad, just because of the club's history and players. They couldn't have afforded me (laughs). But no, to be honest, there was never an opportunity to move there. It would have been nice but fate had other plans."

… whether young players today are less obedient and willing to accept advice from older players:

If you go back ten years, people probably said the same thing: "The new generation doesn't listen to the old generation." And if you look back 20 years, it would be the same. But young players should have exactly this self-confidence and mentality so that they can go their own way. You can't take away their character, ambition and vision. They have to be allowed to live out their lives and do their own thing. Of course, they should also learn - and that's what I see as my job: to guide them on their way with my experience as a leader.

… whether he still sees no future as a coach:

Currently: Yes. I don't want to continue to be a coach because it's too much work for me. You have to cover so many areas, find ideas and solutions, prepare for and follow up on games, coach. You work day and night. A year as a coach would feel like ten years to me. So that doesn't appeal to me.

… about the development of football and the discussed loss of entertainment in the sport due to tactics:

This has less to do with football than with the coaches. Many coaches come with a philosophy and a style of play, and then the individual player becomes insignificant because everyone is forced into a tactic or a system. Of course, a coach's philosophies are important and you need him to manage the team. But I believe that the individual player is the most important part of the team. Because he goes out on the field and makes the difference. And in general, I don't think football is getting boring. In fact, I have the feeling that it continues to grow. You just have to be smart and not close yourself off to new developments.

… about comparisons with Erling Haaland and whether a player could follow in Ibrahimovic’s footsteps:

Maybe it's the ponytail ( laughs ). I don't like comparing players because everyone is on their own journey and writing their own story. I had my era, played my way. He has his era now, plays his way. So there can't be a "new Zlatan". I did my thing, but I'm past my sell-by date. Erling Haaland is a great player and does a fantastic job.

IFAB going ahead with the new rule for GKs after trials in Malta and Premier League 2 were proven successful. It was accepted that refs and GKs were ignoring the 6 second rule. New rule: Ref raises hand after 3 seconds, then counts down 5 more seconds. Formal change expected for 2026/27 season

This is the kind of stuff dreams are made of. The fact that his late father was a keeper just makes the story so much more special.

Real Madrid's priority at right-back is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is allowed to sign a pre-contract from January 1. Liverpool have been unable to renew his contract, which has generated pessimism at Anfield and optimism at the Santiago Bernabeu, although everything is still open.
