Hi folks! There hasn't been any misbehavior in this community, nor to be frank do I expect any, but it's good to have redundancy, cover more time zones, etc... in case of spambots and the like. I'm looking to add a couple more mods!

I don't have many metrics by which to choose fellow mods (such as the age of the account) so all you need to apply and get picked is to be active in this community (which means contribute posts and/or comments... the more quality contributions you've made the more likely you're to get picked). I'm CET, btw.

If you want to guard this community and help it stay a cozy place, apply here in the comments to become a mod. Feel free to add any additional reason why you think you should be picked! Are you a geographer? ~~Are you power hungry?~~ Are you ~~glued to your computer~~ an internet enthusiast? Apply now!

Applications will be open for a while until I pick a couple of peeps.

The work titled "La Guerre Du Petrole" by Jacques Mercier, dated around 1940, is a newspaper map published by Desfossés Neogravure. The map measures 41 cm in width and 56 cm in height and is part of a series created for the French magazine "7 Jours." This map highlights the geopolitics of oil during World War II, focusing on regions such as Iran, Iraq, and Russia.

I enjoy these older infographic style maps. This one focuses on the newly founded Arab League. It's just something about that look that I find really enjoyable.

The high resolution image is available from David Rumsey.

Back when Flight maps looked detailed and well designed instead of boring and informative. If you want to look at the map in even higher resolution, it's available here.

A few years ago, I read Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, which gives a deterministic explanation of why civilizations have progressed the way they have. Among the factors that Diamond cites as determining the fate of a societies is latitude(how far North or South a location is). Locations with equal latitude have equal length days and often similar climates, suitability for crops, etc...

This map, originally created by Beardsley Klamm, has been circulating around the internet and shows some surprising comparisons between where European and North American cities in terms of latitude(eg: Rome is North of Denver).
