When you apply a LUT in post, on Darktable for example, do you apply it to the raw file or do you do some preprocessing, like applying the camera profile beforehand?

Hello all! I’m very casually becoming interested in photography, and my camera is a Kodak PIXPRO. I really enjoy the kind of grainy, vintage look that a digital camera has to offer, and I want to enhance that vibe through editing, but I have no clue where to start. Can someone recommend me a free photo editing application thats compaitable with Mac? thank yall in advance for your sage advice<3

Weatherford Hall captured by my Kodak Pixpro FZ45. I’ve been falling in love with the humanity found in capturing everyday beauty in the imperfection of a cheap digital camera.

I'm looking for something like this TOPDON TC004 Mini Thermal Imaging Camera, except ideally I'd like one that runs on (rechargeable) AA batteries. Does such a device exist?

EDIT: To clarify, my real requirement is for the battery to be replaceable. Doesn't have to be AA specifically. I just want something where if the battery goes bad, I'm not left with a very expensive paper weight.

I recently purchased an M. Zuiko 17mm f1.2 lens after reading it's the sharpest lens in the micro four thirds system. I have the 25mm f1.2, and it's been wonderful -- even wide open -- but all the technical lens tests say it is a step below the 17mm f1.2 and the 45mm f1.2 in terms of sharpness.

Ive been testing this new 17mm lens and I immediately noticed it is almost unusably sharp wide open -- not something I'm used to since I can use the 25mm wide open and achieve very good sharpness. The 17mm wide open leaves quite a bit more to be desired, which is not what I expected based on the reviews online.

Stopping down to 2.0 the 17mm does get very sharp and far more useable, but I'm a bit disappointed by its performance wide open so far.

Maybe someone can take a look at these test shots of a wall, tell me if theyre worth anything at all in terms of being able to tell why this is happening (ie, maybe it could be due to the focal length being wider, or the field curvature being more curved or something? I was thinking, maybe it's that with closeups at 17mm the DOF is so shallow that there isn't much there to be in focus l, but I don't think that's it)

((Also I'm not asking whether either of these shots are usable, really only using them to compare the sharpness wide open of these two lenses))

Feeling like maybe I should just return the 17mm and use the 12-40 f2.8 I have on the shelf if I ever need to go wider than 25mm.

[First pic is 17mm, second is 25mm, distance from wall is ~1m]

Hi guys! I'd like to consider a small portable camera to carry around whenever traveling, that takes about as little space and weight as possible. The idea is replacing the mobile phone on a stick, as a lot can go wrong when attempting a silly picture near a lake or waterfall (you get the idea).

So I guess no additional lenses or similar, just a portable camera that takes good pictures. As it might be also for my gf's use, one of the features I'd like it to have probably would be a reversible screen so it can be used to take selfies. And perhaps another one might be an optical zoom, but this might not be mandatory. I am lucky to be in a country where a lot of the models might be available, and even second hand, but I'd need some direction about what would be recommended.

Thanks!

Olympus Tough TG-3 vs TG-4 (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I'm in the market for a compact, but durable camera to complement my dumbphone, but also be a potential gateway to 1080p amateur photography, mostly nature and street photography. I've narrowed my search to either the Olympus Tough TG-3 or TG-4, but I can't decide which one to get.

They have mostly identical specs, but have a few minor differences:

-TG-3 has manual exposure and TG-4 doesn't.

-TG-4 has manual focus and a live composite mode, as well as access to RAW format, with a slightly better battery.

Based on that, what does the community think might be the better option?

Hello there

I just developed two black and white film rolls. That was a painful experience, because of my bad choice of film:

👿 The Lucky SHD400 is too thin, curling on itself like crazy, slipping on the reel.

🫤 The Lomography earl grey 100 is a bit thicker, better catch on reel’s sides and locking ball.

I wish next rolls will be easier to feed on the reel, any advices ?

Until now nothing beats the Kikipan 320. But it’s not produced anymore.

Asking AI seems only to praise most expensive films, not sure if it is true or biased.

Also I tired asking on the mastodon and associated platform first with not much luck.

Hopefully lemmy is better suited for that kind of open question ?
