I think you can more charitably read this as a rejection of reformism.
How do you square that with the Chairman Mao line?
I mean it's kind of true? Less so nowadays than it was then I'd say.
Regardless of the truth of the sexual prospects of Maoists, I don’t think it’s uncharitable to think that John was not a fan of Marxists.
That's fair. I'm defensive about him because I've been a fan for a long time. Honestly, he was probably a part of my leftward trajectory early on. 'Imagine' is pretty radical. At any rate, I'm never going to hold artists I love to strict political or personal standards-- I probably wouldn't have anything to listen to!
