The US keeps pushing, one blatantly terroristic act (with clear trails back to the US) after another. At some point, even the Russians' saintly patience is bound to wear thin...

Is it going to be asymmetric because it will be disproportionately smaller than the attack and will barely make anyone care?

No it's going to be asymmetric because it will hurt US assets in other region without giving burger empire an excuse to escalate in Ukraine. Can't wait till Yemen sinks a carrier using a hypersonic weapon.
