For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Happy as Lazzaro (2018). An angelically pure-hearted Italian sharecropper finds himself on the ass-end of capitalist exploitation under the thumb of his cartoonishly evil aristocratic landlady; when his only friend is kidnapped, Lazzaro must venture to the city to find him. Reviews frequently compare it to Forrest Gump (1994) and Being There (1979). Director is Alice Rohrwacher, who also directed the grave-robber adventure film La Chimera (2023), which we previously watched.

Next up is Scarlet Street (1945), another gritty noir from Fritz Lang, whose films The Big Heat (1953) and Fury (1936) we previously watched. A conniving woman infatuated with a sleazy crook decides to take advantage of a dorky starving artist’s love for her by taking credit for his paintings and cashing in on them to fund her real relationship. Gunfire and double-crossing ensues from there. Considered one of the best noirs of the 1940s.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:
