For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is PK (2012), an Indian sci-fi satire about a humanoid who crash-lands on Earth, after which he ingratiates himself with the Earthlings around him, who regard him as a prophet. He stumbles from success to success using nothing but his simple, clueless mannerisms. Think Being There (1979) or Forrest Gump (1994), but with a sci-fi twist. At the time of this film’s release, it was the highest-grossing film of all time at the Indian box office. Director Rajkumar Hirani, who was also responsible for 3 Idiots (2009), another big Indian blockbuster.
Next is Top Secret! (1984), a spy spoof from Airplane! (1980) director team Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker. It follows an American singer (Val Kilmer) who goes to East Germany, falls in love with a singer there, and joins the anti-communist resistance. Despite the reactionary premise, it is still well-regarded, as it fills almost every frame with a joke, often referencing things that were current in 1984 pop culture. Good reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.
