Birkin bags specifically are a major social class indicator in the NYC socialite/mega-wealth circle. I'm talking people who know the names of every one of their ancestors going back to 1066 because they were the fuckers selling the weapons to both sides, shipping slaves across the Atlantic, plundering the continent, murdering activists, and so on and so forth. Freaks so wealthy that money is meaningless and burned on signifiers that they're more "in" than their inbred cohort.
