I reject the idea that "excellence" must always be the goal in pursuing an interest.

Same. I'm excellent at like 4 things, everything else is just "yeah I got halfway not terrible and moved on"

I've been working at getting better at being mediocre at things. So far, it's been a source of positive growth, but I do find it ironic how even when it comes to this, I feel compelled to frame it to myself as improving at a thing

I think that's the fallacy the comic is pointing out. Rather than enjoying their interest, the alien thing is only happy if they're immediately good at it.

I agree. It’s more a side effect. The goal should always be enjoyment or some other form of enrichment. Curiosity would work too.
