Saturday beach day, as usual. Happened upon a fleet of Brown Pelicans catching some lunch. Brown Pelicans are the only pelican species that dives for its food like this. From heights of 50-60 foot in the air, and reaching speeds of 40mph. They have evolved airsacs that allow them to dive from such height without damaging themselves.

They were likely going after a school of mullet. The mullet like to jump out of the water and a few minutes before the fleet of pelicans arrived the mullet were jumping right here. Sorry for the far off photos. only had a 200mm zoom w me today, they were a bit far off. Crop photos of distant subjects.

i would characterize myself as a strong swimmer, but heights in general and dives from heights, even relatively minor ones, have always freaked me out. my high school had a 1m springboard and i would do that, but i only did a 3m springboard once and felt like i was putting a gun to my head.

even looking up at the 10m platforms makes me feel ill.

these pelicans are nuts.

I'm going on a trip this summer and my friend wants me to go cliff diving with him out near the great lakes and showed me some pictures. I was like nah dawg I'm too old for that shit.

it's probably easier to deal with heights when you can fly

for me, even if I could fly, sorry I'm not dealing with an ocean. I'd be that pelican going out and like, trying to eat.. I dunno, smaller birds or something. fuck the ocean
