Prusa have shared on their blog the upcoming version of their slicer which is intended to make colour printing easy using CMYKW for 5 colour printers and CMYW for their 4 colour systems

Seems like the obvious next step would be to combine this with variable layer height to get a continuous range of intermediate tones.

Alternatively maybe something like the Roetz-End which can change colors without swapping filaments by rotating and/or stopping the flow of one of its inputs.
