This video goes into why. He argues that the term "tankie" is better replaced with "campist". He explains their worldview and its flaws pretty well.

Interesting, he mentions:

"the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of politics

And yeah that's what tankies (or however they may be referred to) seem to get into. Which is ridiculous to me, because your enemy's enemy is not necessarily a good person. But hey ho.
