Both are generally considered to be one of, if not the absolute, worst episode of their respective franchise.
Wow, is Emancipation really that low ranking among fans? I'm certain I could name at least five episodes I liked less.
What is the problem with the episode that ranks it so lowly?
You'll have to ask a lot of people to get all the answers.
Personally I hate it because it's always seemed to me like pandering and an attempt to force people to see Carter as a bad ass, when it was completely unnecessary, as we see time and time again that being a woman does nothing to hinder her baddassery.
Both seem like someone went "See guys? I'm not sexist! I can have women do things just like men! Please tell me I'm not sexist... Pls." in response to being told their writing is sexist.
Personally I can't think of a single episode I'd rank lower, even the clip shows. Except maybe the out of place nudity in the first episode, but that's not enough todrag the whole episode down.
What 5 would you rank lower?
That episode in particular always felt like an "anti-chud episode". In the sense that it wasn't really made for anyone rather than against misogynists becoming part of the fan base. These people have thick skulls, can't be too subtle in your arguments if you want to get through. Seeing that both of these episodes are relatively early into their respective series kind of reinforces that notion.
So not sure if this was in response to being told they were sexist, I believe this may have been preemptive. But yeah, I guess making a blunt argument to the viewer doesn't really make for good TV. Not really my favourite episode either.
I saw the other comment first also asking for what 5 I'd put lower, so I replied there. In lieu of copy/pasting, see comment here: https://piefed.ca/comment/5124849
I dare you to try
It's been over a year since my last rewatch, which for one this is nigh sacrilege so I gotta fix that, but also means I'm rusty.
But off the top of my head, I did not enjoy as much as Emancipation:
Your list still checks out in my book.
Gotta say that personally I don't necessarily dislike emancipation, was it underwhelming? Maybe.
But I do appreciate the story of someone that the society around them considers an underdog. Then reality sets in and they mop the floor with their opponent and hold a knife to their throat. And I appreciate that it is early enough(s1e3) in the series to show that Carter is not just the brains, but also a warrior.
Perhaps I'm imagining some sexism within our own 90's society, I was quite young, I'm not a women, and back then girls had cooties. But that is what it established, that Carter is a warrior. At this point, we had not seen her fight hand-to-hand. If some say it is underwhelming, I won't argue. But I think for it's time, the episode served it's purpose.
I am lost. Which episode is that referring to? I remember McKay on a ship alone and hallucinating Carter.
I looked it up because it's been a while as I noted and couldn't remember the episode name. It's called Grace, season 7 episode 13
Edited an autocorrect typo
*Grace
I am watching this episode right now, and I barely remember bits and pieces. Like Carter chasing the kid. But for the most part, I do not remember watching this episode. I guess I can understand how if it is that forgettable of an episode for me, it should probably be ranked fairly low.
EDIT: And Carter's discussion with the hallucination of her father about deserving love. But I likely remember that because it was used as a flashback scene multiple times in future episodes.
Autocorrect -_-
Well, while I can agree on some being weaker, I would still put Emmancipation at the very bottom.
But hey, it's all subjective. I for one rather liked the Broca Divide episode.
