We'll have to agree to disagree about it feeling completely different then! Not least of which because I haven't gotten to feel it at all, since it's not out. It looks very cool and fun imho though! Still think the headline is unfair.

Not innovating would at least be more excusable if they just did the non innovated stuff well.

Do any of these Google Maps alternatives have any traffic functionality? That's been my sticking point so far. Most people who are switching off Google are doing it for privacy reasons, which is great, but that generally means they're not giving up location data for traffic purposes.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Why? This was much cheaper.

What do you think I meant by reimagined?

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Oof, on Boost those links aren't parsed correctly.

What does that have anything to do with my comment?

They said colloquial, not traditional.

A good thing done for a bad/selfish reason, is still a good thing done.

I don't think the headline is fair at all. I think it's there, just reimagined. And personally I think it sounds really cool. If I want the old system, I can play the old games.

No, I'd like to do that myself. Mostly need the time and sufficient motivation. Most of my time is eaten up GMing multiple ttrpgs a week right now.

This is apparently a contentious topic among my friends and I'd like to source some more data.

Situation: My partner and I backup our photos from our phones to a shared location. We have the same phone, so the files are named the same way however we do not like the naming scheme our phones use for the files. We have been renaming them manually so far but really getting tired of it and I know it could be achieved with a script.

Goal: Have a script that runs either on demand or on a cron schedule. The script detects files in our designated directories that are not yet renamed, and then renames them to our preferred format. It needs to:

  • remove some letters (e.g. "IMG" or "VID") which I am thinking can also be what helps the script know if it's already been renamed or not.
  • It then needs to insert hyphens (e.g. "20260118" into "2026-01-18").
  • It then needs to remove excess digits at the end of the file name.
  • It then needs to enumerate the files if there are duplicates (e.g. "2026-01-18-1" and "2026-01-18-2")

I have some very basic script writing knowledge and linux experience, and am eager to learn more. I'm not looking for anyone to completely write this script for me but very interested in anyone's suggestions for commands, methods, tips etc that I should look into.

For example, I believe the mv command can accomplish most of what I want to do here but I don't know if that's the most efficient or best way to do so. I'm also not 100% sure where to begin with the inserting hyphens at specific points in the existing name, or how to find files that still haven't been renamed.

Cheers!

In an effort to get away from using Google services, I finally set up a Baïkal server. I've got everything on my phone working well, but when it comes to desktop I'm a little baffled at the lack of more "special dates" support for contacts in my address book. The three I've tried so far are Thunderbird, Betterbird, and Evolution.

In all three cases, creating/editing a contact on the client and navigating to special dates only has a birthday and anniversary option. And if I create/edit a contact on my android apps and give them special dates of death anniversary, name day, or other, those dates will simply not appear on the linux clients I have tries so far.

Does anyone know of a CardDAV client for linux with that support?
