Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

wait do you have any examples of the weird cryptic passive aggressive nonsense about not talking to them?
i haven't seen anything like that and I've been here a while, I'm intrigued.
I dug through the replies I've gotten. They've either deleted their account/comment or I can't find it. It was weird though. Iirc it was called something like voluntary no contact but I'm sure I'm getting the name wrong. It was really entitled sounding. Basically boiled down to, "I'm not going to block you but I want you to make effort to remember my user name and not talk to me (or my son) ever again."
I use the Voyager app and it allows me to tag user names so that I can avoid blocking the borderline cases. I don't mind people who are having a bad day or are just cranky, or maybe have attitudes I find annoying but not fully disturbing. I will of course block extremist authoritarians and such.
Since it's a smallish social media community, I don't really want to block all the discomfort away.
If I know what to expect from someone's posts, it's more entertaining than jarring when someone is being abrasive, and it helps me interject if things get out of hand.
I like that Lemmy/piefed is topic oriented, and not nearly as emotional as a microblogging space like mastodon, which is full of personal branding and ego and frequent annoyance at discussion when all someone wanted to do was make a posturing statement without friction or the jostle of other egos.
wow that's weird! there are a couple prolific posters on here that I very seriously suspect have some flavor of schizo-effective something or other (IANAD etc but the paranoid barely coherent rants are familiar having known a handful of people with it) I wonder if you might have come across one of them
Oh I wouldn't doubt it. I've come across several people that are morbidly fascinating. The screws aren't just loose, they are missing and bailng wire is being applied.
It's been a minute since I ran into them I'll have to see if I can dog through my comment history and find them. They aren't common in most areas I'm in.
