I picked out this... thing. The duvet cover had eaten everything in the machine and turned itself into a postmodern textile art piece.

If you washing machine has a Bedding setting then try using that. It prevents this from happening, at least of front loading machines.

I assume the soaking cycle times are different? I feel like they would be longer in this case? I don't know the chemistry of detergents, water, and hydrophobic molecules (used in clothing) but I assume the automation either increases soaking time for stain penetration or decrease it if it doesn't matter. ,
