Rules

General
  1. Be respectful
  2. Post on topic
  3. No bigotry or hate speech
  4. Memes should not be personal attacks towards other users
  5. We are not YPTB. If you have a problem with the way an instance or community is run, then take it up over at !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com.
    • Addendum: Yes we know that you think ml/hexbear/grad are tankies and or .world are a bunch of liberals but it gets old quickly. Try and come up with new material.
  6. This is not the place to start flamewars between Lemmy, Mbin and Piefed.

federated = connected, it just means that all of these services are connected, they are all built upon activityhub for the most part, and can all technically be connected to each other, but it's usually just mastadons federated with mastodons, lemmy/piefed/mbin federated with lemmy/piefed/mbin, so they connect and display the same content as any other website they are connected to.

So piefed.zip and piefed.social, and anyone else who wants to make a piefed at any domain will all display the same content, if you comment or post on one you see it on the other. The fediverse is a term encapsulating all of these interconnected services. Tho rnow mostly microblogs connect to each other, forums connect to each other, rather than it all interlinking.

Microblogging (twitter) - mastodon, pleroma, misskey, sharkey

Forums (reddit) - piefed, lemmy, mbin

Instagram - Pixelfed

Youtube - Peertube

Just to be super clear, they all display the same content for the most part if in the same category (sometimes instances are more opinionated and will block others or certain communities, lemmy.world blocks piracy communities from other servers like lemmy.dbzer0 from showing up on lemmy.world)

The main benefit of these services is anyone can host them, so if one gets shut down another can rise up, like hydra basically, instead of one company hosting, it's spread out among many ppl
