I personally am an atheist. from what i have seen in my life, i have formed the opinion that people living their religion with the intent of being good are actually not harming someone, but are strengthening communities. I sadly have to agree that there are sooooo many people out there using religion as an excuse to abuse and murder.
It's the same with islam or christianity. if you want to use it to make your world better, you will probably focus on the part where you welcome your neighbor and support your community - many religious communities act this way. But the moment where you start othering people using religion, you aren't really following your belief anymore, you are using it as a weapon; and if you mix it with a nationalist movement, you get shit like the Zionists or ISIS.
Minor nitpick: ISIS is explicitly not nationalist. Islamists in general think nationalism is bullshit because it contradicts Islam.
Its a bit like instead of nationalism abusing religion, its religion abusing nationalsim... same same
