There's no way they don't try their very best to keep it secret until the deadline, pretend that ot just happened, and then stop even pretending after the election.
Not recovering, almost certainly, dead is another matter. Modern medicine can do an insane job of keeping someone "alive" long past the point their body has given out. Particularly when money isn't a factor.
My guess is that he's either brain-dead, but kept "alive" by machines, or wishes he was brain-dead, while being kept in pain by machines.
Personally I like the latter.
