Nope, corsets were not anywhere near the hazard people like to characterize them as. They were essentially a combined shapewear and bra, and most women achieved those exaggerated silhouettes with padding, not tightening things. The materials corsets were made of back then (whale balleen, paper, reeds, ribbons, cording and sometimes a wooden busk) weren't puncturing anyone's lungs. It was just a popular past time of men in the day to ridicule and belittle women for their fashion choices, a time honored tradition that continues to this day.
