He very obviously criticized the implementations he was witnessing, but still held to the ideals. It's easy to imagine "No, no, not like that! "
Again, reread animal farm. He was not a socialist, he was a misanthropic freak who used his status as a supposed socialist as cover to do nothing but red bash even as fascism ran rampant.
