once i played a reel-to-reel audio tape and witnessed the rust neatly separating from the plastic substrate and collecting in a pile as it passed through the head. somehow i could imagine this type of thing happening if they're not extremely careful.
did it play anything comprehensible?
it did, but the fidelity was varyingly poor
