About 2 weeks ago. It's no better or worse than the usual music they play.

Because it makes some people (not you or I) hang about the shops longer and buy more things.

Spot on! Too much/too hard and I make a 180 right at the door. Sometimes -when in the mood- I challenge an employee to turn it down. Their reaction is always one of :

  • "we can't, even if we wanted to" to which I offer -but are always being denied- to pull some plugs or fuses.
  • "it's what our customers want" but can't provide reference customers nor details on either which/when/where/how they polled
