bonus tip (especially if you have a front loader) drain the excess reservoir or whatever it’s called. your washing machine may not be able to drain all the water it used and has a separate unconnected drain hose.

water stays in the machine when it stops because the drain pump doesn't succ it dry.
there's usually a small secondary hose to manually drain from the lowest point.
imo it'd be overkill to drain it like that every time, pretty sure you'd only do that before servicing it.
but my qualifications are that I let the machine fully clog before I realised there was a filter to clean, so I'm probably not an authority on the subject.
When I moved in we had a tech come out to fix something and she said once a month is recommended. Can prevent stinky clothes.
unscented detergent also prevents stinky clothes
That explains it, I've been using the stinky detergent the whole time.
