Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Testimony of a Cuban combatant who defended President Maduro

The following is an interview of Cuban internationalist combatant Yohandris Varona Torres, who was in the unit that confronted the U.S. imperialist invasion of Caracas on Jan. 3. The interview was done by Ignacio Ramonet (author of “100 Hours with Fidel”). Translation: Walter Lippmann, publisher of Cuba News, a daily . . .

What a fucking hero.

Regarding the armor and casualties, I’m not aware of any body armor that remains effective after taking one shot. Kevlar works by solidifying at the place of impact. So after you hit it once, the rest of it turns into a weighted vest. Fudging the numbers of how many casualties we took/inflicted has been a thing people have used to project power for ages now. Hell maybe the 300 spartans got into a fight with like ten fancy persian dudes who just wiped the floor with them.

Ballistic plates can protect against multiple rounds depending on the plate and projectile, they’re standard issue body armor

US SOF is going to be wearing hard armor plates that are multi-hit rated against armor piercing rounds.

I don't mean to "well akshually" reddit-reply to your comment but it is important to know what our good and Godly protectors are wearing.

Edit: Sorry I didn't see someone else had already responded. Here is a little blurb on some Level IV plates that are available on the clear web to civilian scum like us, imagine what kind of spooky materials Delta has.

The LTC 28534 is a high end ballistic solution comprised of a hot pressed Boron Carbide Ceramic Core, supported by a lightweight polyethelene backer. The LTC 28534 is a military plate which is NOT governed under the civilian NIJ standard. This has a rough equivalent of Level 4 protection, however they are officially rated for three shots of .30-06 M2 AP and three shots of 5.56x45mm M995 Tungsten Core AP. ... Leading Technology Composites is the current manufacturer for US SOCOM SPEAR plates, the LTC 25834 is literally a military plate.

doggirl-thumbsup You've inspired me and I'm lowkey thinking of writing something longer on the civilian and LEO side of this topic later, I'll tag you in if I actually follow through.

[–] Red_October@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

Please do, comrade. That sounds like very important information that a lot of us would find very interesting right now.

Sparta had the best PR machine in the world. The guys sucked shit, got their asses kicked except for a brief 10-15 years and everyone still sucks their dicks about it. They weren't good for anything other than hunting slaves and they sucked at that too.
They had a shitton of slaves with them to Thermopylae and a bunch of other greeks too. The only good thing that came out of that debacle was the fact some dumbass romans tried to make their last stand at Thermopylae many years later - Against other romans! Everyone knew the story then, so the guys got their shit kicked in, which was very funny.

Or so I'm told doggirl-sweat

It's not even that they had the best PR machine in the world, is was that Plato was a fascist little shit who was a Sparta-boo, and he was the primary source for most Greek history for a very very long time. Most Athenians thought Spartans were a joke because their ability to create a navy sucked (because they ran a slave economy).

I always love the Sparta story about Philip of Macedon saying "if I invade sparta you will be destroyed, never to rise again"
Spartas response? "If."
Very cool.
What happened next was that they got invaded and destroyed. They're like the original fascists with how much shit they suck
