No you don't. OP just chose a bad example.

It's not been that long since I last used Linux, but when I did, I had to type a command in the terminal to change screen brightness (kubuntu)

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

... You can just change it from the bottom right tray? I run KDE Neon now, but used to run kubuntu. That's just a standard feature of KDE, and I think gnome too. I didn't even know there was a way to do it via terminal.

To be honest, I'd have no idea how to change screen brightness in Windows at all.
I either do it with function keys on the keyboard (on a laptop), or the monitor itself (on a desktop).

It's in screen settings. But you can also use the keyboard keys and it works.

Well, it's also worked in Plasma on every PC I used so far.
So this isn't a case of "You need the console for everything in Linux" but rather "Something doesn't work on your system".
Which can happen on any OS.

Well, according to what I read on the internet, everything works out of the box for Linux and this year is the year of the Linux desktop. But according to personal experience and most of the people I know IRL, there is always someone that spent last weekend fixing some weird thing that doesn't work on their system in Linux that used to work correctly when they used windows instead.

everything works out of the box for Linux

For them, unless you have the exact same hardware and use case as whoever you heard that from, you've misunderstood.

Everything works out of the box for linux for me because I bought hardware that specifically is known to run well with linux and is supported (and previously was running hardware so old it was supported by the time I got there lol). So if you're running the same hardware and same distro and are using it the same as me, then yes expect the same results, if not, expect possible different results from whichever variable you changed.

It may work out of the box for you if you also have well supported hardware and are using a good distro for it (newer hardware bleeding edge distro, older hardware either LTS or you can try a bleeding edge maybe). If you have nvidea or broadcom it probably won't work without some fiddling because your hardware isn't well supported due to the companies not wanting to.

and this year is the year of the Linux desktop.

Believing memes now are we? This is the funny joke linux version of the mindset like when qanon was all "totally gonna lock up hillary next month bro totally it'll happen just one more month bro," the most serious it get is people going "well shit linux actually has been gaining more users lately, nice, 'year of the linux desktop lolol.'" Don't believe that you should remove the French language pack either that's a meme/trick to get you to delete your system.
