The killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretty has activated communities across this country to begin organizing to protect themselves from unhinged state violence from the masked federal agents. Communities around the country have spontaneously begun ICE Rapid Response groups to support and protect their neighbors, but reports of infiltration threaten to reduce the effectiveness, or destroy these groups. With so many new people getting engaged in resistance work against American Fascism, it’s understandable that basic Operational Security mistakes are being made, and that’s stoked the flames of fear in those looking to join the fight. In response some adopt extremely conservative Security Postures based on generalized anxieties, rather than specific threats. In this video I will talk about Security Theater and the risks of fetishizing OpSec. We’ll start with a broad view of the many crises that have lead us to this challenging moment, discuss the strategies that have worked in the past to outlast oppressive regimes, lay out my threat models for ICE Watch/Rapid Response organizing, and give tips on what I’ve found effective at building solidarity.
