Eh ... though during some times in some parts, every effort would be made to capture the king or duke alive, and then ransom him back for either political considerations or money. 'The feudal Middle Ages' covers a broad spectrum of time, locations, and cultures ... but in a lot of those places, nobility riding into battle could rest relatively easy knowing that they had a much higher chance of surviving the battle than the ordinary foot soldiers around them, even if defeated.
(Of course, that wasn't universal, though. There definitely were times, places, and situations where the nobility could expect to be tortured and killed if defeated and captured. And there was always the chance of simply being very unlucky and catching a stray arrow or being trampled by a frightened horse or something.)
