I probably just overthought it because it seems to pretty much have all the same moving parts visible in the M203 detail photos. Might just be that the clone in the OP pic has a guard that folds in a bit tighter when you don't need to use it, for sleekness / snag reducing purposes. Suppose there could be a linkage to the little safety lever in theory but we'd just be guessing.
