Seems like the highly praised Hong Kong's peaceful protests yielded to absolutely nothing.

Actually, a violent riot / attempted revolution would not have made things any better. Would've lead to a much worse crackdown. Much more deaths.

Its just impossible to win against the PLA as a bunch of civillians without military training...

And you won't ever get western countries to help... you have zero outside military willing to intervene...

Seriously, you think waving a bunch of US or UK flags is gonna get them to send aircraft carriers and do airstrikes against the PLA? No lmfao...

This is not the Ukraine situation... Ukraine has a military built up... Hong Kong does not have it's own military.

This isn't Taiwan... Taiwan has its own military, and the PLA never stepped foot on Taiwan; in contrast, the PLA is already inside Hong Kong... Hong Kong government is already controlled by Beijing... (it's called a devolved government)

Mainlanders already have low sympathy towards Hong Kongers, violence only promotes anti-HongKong sentinments amongst Mainlanders

Mainland has a MUCH BIGGER population...

You really need to sway Mainlanders on your side.

Like... my point is... at this moment "Free Hong Kong" is not gonna work, you need a "Free China" movement...

Hong Kong can never be free until CCP falls.

Give me liberty or I guess I have to go home or something

Very inspirational

Mainlanders and Hong Kongers have the same oppressors, really should be working together, not be fighting each other.

You're thinking too small. You're talking about throwing molotovs at the popo... like... sure okay... not sure how that'll help...

You really need to be taking it to Beijing.

Get Xi deposed.

Death to Xi Jinping.

You have the same mentality as the "left vs right" culture war type of people... when the real enemy is at the top.

I think they made the situation worse. The original protests was over an extradition bill, which they eventually agreed to drop. But then the demands kept getting higher and higher to the point it became separatism. I think they shot themselves in their own foot if they seriously thought China would allow separatism to happen

Bowing down wouldn't have helped either. CCP doctrine is basically "well you had your fun but now it's over"

In before tankies show up crying that Chinese cultural imperialism is okay because "it's anti-west."

Nevermind that they're committing the same homogenizing colonization of thousand+ year-old cultures that tankies criticize the west for.

Yes, we know, the US sucks. So does the PRC.

[–] couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah it's always funny to take their criticisms of the West (I believe most of them must be US 20 and 30-somethings) and are completely oblivious of them in their 'uncritically supported actually existing socialist countries'.

Sure being gay is outlawed, but that's because it's too soon and the country needs to stay united

Sure all the minorities are being re-educated to create a nationalist monoculture empire, but that's really the only single way you can beat the, erh... evil nationalist empire.

It was going to happen eventually regardless. HKSAR has an expiry date
