  1. It was basically a pilot for Cell processors, which weren't especially cheap to produce until quite late in its lifecycle
  2. Blu-Ray diodes were not cheap, either, and the format was still competing with HD-DVD. A Blu-Ray player in 2006 cost more than a PS3
  3. The original PS3 models also had an Emotion Engine onboard for backward compatibility with PS2 games, which was later replaced with much cheaper software emulation.

I think they were also too confident about their status as monopoly but you know it better
