Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

10 years ago, a statement like this from ANY potus would have turned into a month off front-page freakout. Now? It gets a one-second shrug.

Fuck. Where we are now. So quickly.

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 69 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even 10 years ago tbh... If Biden said this when he was president, Republicans would inexplicably become the number one advocates of healthcare and childcare and screech endlessly about him being a warmonger for several news cycles.

It’s not “10 years ago,” because it has nothing to do with time passing. It has everything to do with Republicans doing a coordinated and concerted capture of all media.

It goes away because they want it to - the silly non-news used to stick around for a month because of their manipulation. It’s important to remember and talk about this widely

Big strong scary words behind an anonymous handle. You sound real tough.

The toughest thing you could do would be to write an op-ed and publish it under your real name and talk this tough.

You can’t. You won’t. Sit down.

We all agreed on what to do with Nazis 80 years ago. When did you change your mind?

[–] HermitBee@feddit.uk 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

We all agreed on what to do with Nazis 80 years ago.

Sneak them into the USA to work as high level civil servants and scientists?

I don't think that will really help now, tbh.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 2 points 14 hours ago

Excellent point.

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world -3 points 17 hours ago

Coward. Did you write your op-ed under your real name yet big scary tough guy?

Show us the way with your big strong words

I doubt it would have applied to the cons.

IOKIYAR.

Newt and his team have been working to divide America since at least 1990. Actively. And it gets little mention. Meanwhile, plenty of reactionary centrists and nearly all of the mainstream media and of course the unhinged right wing would say things like "Obama is divisive" as some kind of serious analysis.

Meanwhile, the cons have been intentionally trying to divide. And were not called on it every single day, as they should be.

The GOPAC memo "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control" is something every American should be aware of, but I bet maybe 1% are.

So if earlier asshole GOP POTUSes were to blurt this out before, it would probably get bothsidered and downplayed back then, too.

Such a useful and underused character, I always appreciate when I see it.

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 9 points 22 hours ago

The GOP effectively castrated news outlets and favored them to conservative propaganda.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 8 points 23 hours ago

Maybe, but in my entire lifetime (certainly more than 10 years), Republican POTUS can say or do literally anything they want with little to no actual repercussions at the polls. I feel 100% confident that Reagan could have said this, his policies were doing this just not so explicitly stated. Bush Jr got the USA into war over false pretenses and it took many, many years after his presidency was long over before public opinion shifted slightly on the topic in terms of realizing how wrong it was.

What was the actual quote?

Like, I know trump sucks and absolutely says these things with his actions, but...

MeidasTouch is one of the most clickbaity, reactionary, and misleading excuses for "journalism" that we have on the left. The kid does a good job going head-to-head with conservative pundits on televised news, but I don't take any of their headlines at face value, especially because they all tend to be inflammatory and are often no more than speculative.

I'm not giving them the web traffic to see if there's anything of substance behind this headline. Anyone who did, care to share the direct quote?
