Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

(I promise this is the last of me pestering you about this game :P)
Interesting, I'm sure you already know but there's no stamina management in Sekiro, which was honestly super nice.
You also have the fast paced combat.
I don't think proactiveness applies for this genre, if I'm understanding correctly.
but yeah, fights on average are a little bit longer compared to the rest of the soulsborne catalogue. (if I average 3 min per boss fight, in sekiro they took me 4 or 5) There was one long one, took me about 10 min another outlier took me 8. Maybe some of that is inexperience on my part. theres a special type of enemy that also has a long fight but that was side content I didn't do.
Dodging, strafing, hit and run, holding block, are surprisingly viable in some cases and preferable to parrying in others. They work during the entirety of the game. So, no need to perfect block all of the enemy's moveset, just gotta make the right judgement call. (the parry sound is like a dopamine hit on command tho from one neuro divergent to another...Heheh )so the approach is not super rigid as I initially said.
For SotE boss fights, I'd say difficulty and lenght is very on par with the late base game with a couple of fights even being pretty easy, that is, until final mandatory content time and it just goes- fuck you- difficult.
Off alright,I'm done... Sorry for all the heavy Sekiro proselytizing XD this is me right now
Oh don't apologise. First of all as someone neurodivergent I understand info dumping and hyperfixations very well. And secondly you're one of my favourite people on here anyway. Plus you are apparently a fellow enjoyer of the word proselytize, which is worth bonus points as far as I'm concerned.
Also I pester everyone else on here about the games I'm into all the time, you know. Just as well I get some back on occasion.
I could probably go on at length about the differences, but I always view Soulslikes as fundamentally reactive in nature. There is timing and reflexes to a certain extent, but in general the combat is about pattern memorization and patience. Especially as time goes by and Fromsoft are adding more stuff like delayed attacks and built in rollcatches and stuff that prevents you from playing in a flowstate. You dodge dodge dodge and wait for your opening. In general when you die in a Soulslike it's because you got greedy, you got impatient or you hadn't yet memorized the pattern.
Ninja Gaiden has a lot more movement and a lot more tools, and in general relies much more on how much you as a player can utilise your toolkit. It rewards muscle memory of combo strings and wide awareness of your whole arsenal. For the most part, when you die in Ninja Gaiden it's because *you yourself * could have done something else and better in that moment. Use another weapon, better spacing, use the environment, use this move for iframes, cancel that move with shurikens, save Ninpo to have for this part... I think that's what I mean by more active and proactive - you make your own openings.
Actually now I'm the one ranting.... Can I reuse your cute penguin picture?
P.S
I know what you mean by the dopamine parry sound though. I got that from both Rise of the Ronin and Enotria, which both had great parry sound effects too. And I do think maybe I haven't given enough thought to Sekiro's lack of stamina, that is a point in its favour. Maybe I'll add it to the consideration pile.
WHAAAT?? How did I even gain such an honor?
hopefully I'm using this correctly
Makes me happy to hear tho
You make really quality contributions ! That doesn't count as pestering in my book.
Regarding proactiveness, Then I read you correctly and I agree 100%. That's how I know Ninja Gaiden is not for me: too much choice, too much going on, I find it overstimulant. I guess it's also a matter of lack of neuroplasticity at my age.
Oh and I'm sure you meant it figuratively but cute penguin I found in the adhd comm it's not oc, sadly with no attribution attached to it.
