Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Sekiro man, what a ride...Celebratory wine is blowing this way out of proportion though XD. buut, my past self didn't think I had it in me so... Yay.

Fucking great game, the difficulty needs some serious demystifying... It was not nearly as tough as I expected. That said, this felt sorta like a trial run...

Here's to the completed playthrough, and many more to come, cheers!

An additional note:

I bursted out laughing during final boss phase two, I seriously thought the

Tap for spoiler"Glock Saint" moniker

was a community joke! XD

Congratulations! ๐ŸŽ‰

I still don't think I have it in me to take on Sekiro, though maybe that's partly just head gremlins who knows. The ease with which you've beaten it does make me second guess my hesitation a bit. But maybe the difficulty doesn't need demystifying and you're just a god gamer?

Also your post-credits wine celebration looks so good it's making me falter in my dedication to give up drinking...

Oh no!!! If you are quitting for whatever reason ,stick to it. You can do it. Better off without, honestly โ™ก

Nah, I'm just an average gamer. XD I feel that any souls fan can do it. (And owes it to themselves to at least try, tbh). It's that good. (Don't let the head gremlins hold you back. )

I mean, come oooon! you have played through all the Ninja Gaidens right? Those are actually hard af. (Before you say it, different kind of hard,I know. But the mindset required is the same)

Oh don't worry I quit drinking like ten years ago at this point. Time flies. It looks tempting and all but I don't keep any alcohol in the house anymore so it's easy to keep away from it. Having social anxiety and disliking leaving the house probably helps, I have to actually go outside first if I would want to drink and who wants to suffer through that?

Also don't discredit yourself, you were breezing through DS3 and you beat Sekiro quickly and handily, I think you're a better gamer than you think. You're definitely a certified Souls veteran at least.

But yeah it's interesting, I find Ninja Gaiden easier for some reason, even though they may be harder in some ways. I am still only halfway through NG4 though, I got sidetracked, but I have beaten the first three and Ninja Gaiden 2 twice this past year, plus some various chapter challenges and stuff, sometimes on the harder difficulties. But maybe the fast pace proactive and stamina-less combat is easier on my ADHD brain or something, I don't know. Ninja Gaiden doesn't really have any super long and exhausting boss fights and those are the ones I struggle with most in Fromsoft games. The long 10-15+ minute fights with 3 phases where you have to maintain perfect concentration and patience for such a long time. Sister Friede and Demon Prince already pushed me to my limits in the DS3 DLC, and I think that's what's made me a little hesitant about Fromsoft games of late (and kept me from attempting Elden Ring DLC and Sekiro).

Giving up drinking is much more worth your pride than completing a video game.

Real champ in the comments ๐Ÿ’ช

Heh, hesitation

[โ€“] Embargo@lemmy.zip 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, man. I've got to start cracking a bottle of wine when I roll credits on a game. What a wholesome idea! Good on you!

[โ€“] GrantUsEyes@piefed.zip 7 points 20 hours ago

First time I've done this! It felt out of my league for so long, that I had promised myself a "reward" for completing it... T'was mostly a mental block tho!

[โ€“] domi@lemmy.secnd.me 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Did you also smack your left monitor in this playthrough? :)

[โ€“] GrantUsEyes@piefed.zip 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

XD I knew someone would comment on it. Heh,I'm notthe type to rage, just very clumsy. :P

[โ€“] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I should give this another try. I got sorta stuck, and bored.

[โ€“] GrantUsEyes@piefed.zip 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

You should! There was some friction for me in the beginning but once it clicked it felt like regular fromsoft. (In terms of difficulty)

[โ€“] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Congrats, glad you enjoyed your time!

Which ending did you end up with?

[โ€“] GrantUsEyes@piefed.zip 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Tap for spoiler

Sad one, poor Kuro, poor Wolf. But feels narratively natural for a first go at the game.

[โ€“] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

Yeurp, that's basically the default. You kinda need to go out of your way to get the other two endings: One cuts your playthrough short, in a way, skipping out on some late-game locations, and the "true" ending takes place right where you got your ending but some prerequisites are needed.

I hope my vague descriptions aren't spoilers for you :)

Congrats dude, not out of proportion you classy bastard.

This is still the best game of all time imo. It goes hard. If you think it wasn't hard enough, you now have gauntlents to try.

[โ€“] GrantUsEyes@piefed.zip 2 points 20 hours ago

It is definitely one for the ages

[โ€“] yakko@feddit.uk 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

...Out of proportion? I would have a celebratory glass of wine just for having made time to try again with this game.

Every year or two I dip back in and get curved hard. It's so gutsy and visceral, I love it but I lose my nerve. Part of the problem was using a fuzzy weak projector and I couldn't read anything. But that's an excuse, it's mostly that I get flustered. Even I admit it's a game design masterpiece though!

It's so gutsy and visceral

It certainly can be, a couple of times it felt like I was playing bloodborne! I'd say this game's worth a serious try. Get yourself properly set up, I'll be your personal cheerleader!

[โ€“] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 19 hours ago

I did finally upgrade to a projector that does tolerable resolution and response rates, have been steadily chewing into my backlog ever since. Currently trying to finish AC6 after putting that on hold for a few years as well.

Bloodborne is even deeper in the queue, and I've been admiring it from afar for several years. Same issue, I've always been more facile with slower or more forgiving From titles.

[โ€“] a_good_hunter@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Congratulations! Now, onto Platinum! You can do it.

I am indeed a sucker for trophies.
