I have played Mario RPG a few times in my life, including once within the past couple of years. The remake looks like a straight remaster with updated graphics, so I don't really have any desire to play it again, especially if it means paying $60 or whatever it will cost. But I think this game isn't really aimed at me. There are a lot of people who never played the original, including lots of young kids who weren't around when it came out. I think that is the main audience for this remake. And for them, I think this will be an exciting release, because the game is still awesome.
I can’t imagine they’re building the game off of the old original Mario RPG, so it’s definitely a remake. Remakes aren’t defined by their changes to gameplay, but by whether they’re built from the ground up or not.
I’d genuinely be blown away if they just remastered the original game after so much time.
