I know I'm not alone feeling like this when I try to explain to friends what communism really is, and how it could free us from exploitation and save the planet from climate catastrophe.

I explain it this way. Our transportation systems are like our veins and arteries. And cars are clogging them with the shittiest cholesterol available.
