I initially agreed with you on principle, but after viewing the facts in this particular case I think this person was educated with about as much patience as they deserve and exactly as much mockery as they require.
Yeah I no longer think this case is salvageable either

Spare the rod and spoil the child can have two interpretations; One is that the parent is a shepherd and uses their crook, their rod, to protect the sheep from predators, gently goad them to a safe path, and sometimes drag the stupid water-logged fuckers out of a pond because they're really not very bright and will kill themselves if no one is watching them. The other interpretation is that zen "And then the master thapped him in the head with a stick and he was enlightened" thing.
