I'm designing a Lemmy client and spent a good 3 extra minutes trying to figure out why this was taking so long to load. Thanks.

[-] Enasni@lemmy.world 40 points 1 year ago

Programmers are a truly interesting bunch. Y’all can be absolute geniuses capable of some amazing, talented shit then do something as simple as ignoring a post title for 3 entire minutes lmao.

Sometimes your curiousity is stronger than your logic, but that’s not a bad thing!

[-] Mutelogic@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

I read this in Gandalf's voice.

[-] damnYouSun@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

Why isn't this code compiling?

After 10 mins of investigation

*Changes JSON.stingify to JSON.stringify

I actually thought this image was large and was taking the to load, lol

[-] wolfpack86@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

It didn't even register as s problem for me, either 😂

[-] ddigger@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I promptly refreshed my screen, while thinking wtf, 90's again.

Brings back memories.
Don't forget to clear todays history.

[-] GaroshTheSpaceShip@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

LOL I'm triggered, we'll played

[-] Botree@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Oh dear. This just unlocked some ancient memories. Never thought I'd ever be reminded of a half loaded image of Cindy Crawford ever again.

[-] ironchico@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Seems just a tad faster than I remember. Also I always got to just before the good bits and then that always happened.

[-] renrenPDX@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It depends on size and quality.

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

It's easy to tell that you had a 56k connection instead of a 33k one.

I just got flashbacks. To add on to this those late 90s porn sites that when they finally did load had the little stars on the tits and groin and were like $20/mo.

[-] NovaPrime@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 year ago

Learning how to load bottom up was a game changer

[-] kemsat@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

This better not be real…

[-] netburnr@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Ita not.

You either had top to bottom line by line or you had a square that then turned 8 squares then 16 then a blurry titty, 20 minutes late mom picked up the phone to call her sister and you were back to national geographic magazines.

[-] Shaggadellic@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

You just triggered my 90s porn PTSD!

[-] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

I concur.

It's damn funny, but somehow still too soon

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Having clearly had my teenage years at around the same time as the OP, I can confirm this is a very realistic simulation.

[-] Etterra@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Except for the inevitable horror you'd get when the image did finish loading, but it turned out to be a bait 'n switch.

[-] PaulDevonUK@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Woo hoo, 9600 baud modem downloading.

9600 bps? Check out Mr Moneypants down around his ankles over here.

[-] curiouscuriosity@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Dear sir, can I interest you in a blazingly fast modem that is 50% faster than this at 14.4K?

3:10 not enough being yelled at because someone wanted to use the phone

[-] Misconduct@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

When you spent three days downloading a movie and it was some other stupid movie. The absolute betrayal 😔

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago

Goddamned accurate lol

[-] GONADS125@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

A little too fast for dial-up, bit otherwise extremely accurate.

[-] ArgentRaven@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Yeah man, I just got this 56k dial up. It's so awesome. It's limited to 51k, but after they update the regulation it'll be blazin fast!

[-] freamon@feddit.nl 8 points 1 year ago

We had less to work with in those days, but we made do dammit!

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

These kids will never know the struggle of bashing one out to an ascii boob

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I had a scam involving that- I would download porn pics from the internet at campus computer labs (I was still in high school, but it was hard to stop anyone who wanted to from using the labs, especially at 2 am) and then upload them to BBSes and I'd get a huge ratio and be able to download a shit ton of games. So I got spank material and was able to play a bunch of games for free.

[-] madcaesar@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Alright OP I enough fucking around let's see the picture!

[-] ConfuzedAZ@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

This is so accurate I can hear the handshake.

[-] ColdWater@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I thought my internet is slow. This is my first comment on Lemmy.world

If you want the real deal, use oldweb.today. you can even choose the browser from yonder days.

[-] Fpsfrank85@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Gold Jerry! Gold!

[-] Chickenstalker@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Meh. In the 90s, I bought bootleg JAV CDs from CD stalls under the tree next to the 7-11. Downloading porn was only viable in the 2000s.

[-] Schooner@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Okay it took me a few cycles before I realised it's a gif ngl

[-] CloudMunch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

TAKE YOUR UPVOTE AND GO!

[-] azdood85@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Is that the meme of Dawson crying?

[-] Zathras@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I'm a bit slow. It took me multiple attempts on different lemmy apps to understand. Well played 🙃

[-] mnrockclimber 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Which file format was it where you’d get the whole box and it would sharpen as the download continued? Would start off super blurry but at least you weren’t waiting for the line by line paint-in.

[-] basskitten@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

jpeg has a progressive mode, could be that.
