They are protesting because it is sponsored by an oil company (Shell), and because the cyclists don't cycle to the event. Many of them flew or drove in, and events like this also generate an immense amount of pollution and plastic waste. Read any article where there are quotes from the protestors and they specifically say the reasons they are protesting.

The shell sponsorship is the big one.

While cycling might be the best form of personal transportation, that has nothing to do with a spectacle like this, and all its wasteful conspicuous consumption.

There should be a championship for commuter cycling: Who can bring a weeks groceries across their city on the most run down bicycle?

Whoever took this photo should be stripped of their ability to operate (or fail to operate) a camera/phone.

Imo your comment shouldnt get downvoted.

Protestors/activists dont behave oridinary/lawfully and dont popularize truth. They seek attention from society to make their issue mainstream and force politicians to take action.

Tell me you don't watch the tour without telling me. It's been halted by protests every year for many years.

I believe this is targeted advertising by activists, those who care about cycling as sport are likely to care about cycling as transportation, freedom and safety on the road for cyclists, and are probably easily mobilized into activism.
