Italian Summer

  • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving exclusive MOAR BADGER (Silvertip)
  • Razor: F. Rolli Rolli's Hollow Ground 5/8" (carbon steel, barber's notcho)
  • Lather: Abbate Y La Mantia Verbena Toscana
  • Post Shave: Acqua di Parma Barbiere
  • Fragrance: Farina 1709
  • Hand Soap: Le Petit Olivier Verveine Citron

Yes, that's a hand soap pairing. When I sang the praises of Verbena Toscana recently, @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social pointed me to this hand soap that has a very similar scent profile. It's now the standard hand soap in the bathroom I use most.

Fresh summerly scents all around. I'm counting down the days until our vacation.

But does it smell the same?

No, not the same. VC is more bright lemon, VT more sweet orange. But it's clearly very similar

I may want to get VT then - maybe 👀

July 6, 2024

  • Brush: Chisel & Hound Classic 26mm V23 Fanchurian

  • Razor: Filarmonica 13 Novodur 13/16" Para Profesionales Full Hollow

  • Lather: Gentleman's Nod - Tusitala - Soap

  • Toner: Thayers - Rose - Toner

  • Aftershave: Gentleman's Nod - Tusitala - Aftershave

  • Fragrance: Gentleman's Nod - Tusitala - Parfum Extrait

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Tusitala came in the mail last night. The soap and scent are great. I'm very happy to have this. The fragrance sounds a little like a random bunch of notes were thrown together:

Bright and zesty citrus. Exotic and spicy cardamom. A tangy green peach. A floral combo of Jasmine and Orris. A bittersweet Saffron and rich rum. Rich and natural tobacco leaf and musk. Tonka and deep woods.

But this was done by a professional perfumer, and you can really tell. It's quite elegant IMO.

And, after more than 550 straight shaves, I finally found a 2-pass shaving pattern that allows me to get as close a shave around the Adam's Apple as I can on the rest of my face. Slow learner.

July 6, 2024

  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts "Santa Noir" w/Maggard 28mm SHD Badger
  • Razor: Chiseled Face - Legacy Raw Titanium (#69)
  • Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (4)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Rhapsody - Soap
  • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Sni Mato - Aftershave

Stanky. Good stank, though.

Saturday, July 6, 2024: Shit Stag

It's hard to overstate just how shit the tallow-based Midnight Stag soap is. I took thrice as much as I would with a normal soap, and still got a foamy, airy "lather". It is slick, though. If it weren't such a meme scent...

Have a good day!

I think the soap is fine but certainly not top-tier. After using Midnight Stag for my first AA, I realized it is not really a great summer (northern hemisphere) scent for me.

I love the CFG base. 🤷‍♂️

They seem to have 2 bases, and you can get the stag in both (just avoid the tallow base)

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 week ago

Ohhhh, the silk tallow base? I've killed a tub of that stuff. I liked that base, too! Definitely a little tricky, though.

Maybe with a synthetic? What was your trick?

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 week ago

I do tend to use synthetic brushes a lot.

With that base I remember the proto-lather never really got any "bigger" while lathering, so I tub loaded what looked like it was going to be enough soap for the whole shave, then just added water to weigh it down a bit. That's pretty much it.

Thanks, I'll try this!

  • Prep: warm water
  • Razor: Leaf Thorn
  • Blade: Derby Premium half DE
  • Brush: TGS Galaxy 26 mm
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann - The Full Measure of Man
  • Post Shave: Moon Soaps Old School balm; moisturiser

2 pass head shave. A totally comfortable one I might add.

FMoM is, by far, a soap very deserving of its own hype. The scent is just chef's kiss throughout... perhaps not best suited to summer, but do I care? Nope. Plus in the Omnibus base it lathers like something otherworldly and leaves great slickness for head shaving.

Using the Thorn again was also a pleasure. I'm now firmly believing that SE razors are prime head shavers - every single one I've used works either really well or even amazing like this one. I could probably sell all my DEs and just invest in more modern and vintage SEs and be happy. Sad but true...

I still struggle a bit with my new Lemmy app so please don't be scared about some hiccups; I try to remedy mistakes as soon as I notice them.
