I save my cat! All of my other shit can be replaced.

My cat. He may be a total asshole, but still my number one top priority. Everything else can be replaced in one way or another.

My computer, a lot of files on there I don't want to lose. I have them backed up to other hard drives, but in the same computer. So I need to save the computer.

[-] AdminWorker@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Dude. A backup in the same computer is not a "backup". You should have a separate network attached storage (nas) and a script like syncthing backing up to a different hard drive (the nas). If you don't want to do it yourself, you can buy a all in one device that has the software and hard drive all in one.

If you are not saving things to a remote location, you will lose all your shit in a flood or fire. Remote storage has gotten cheap enough to make it practical.

Hetzner storage boxes cost 3.8€/month for 1TB, which is more than enough for the important things people have.

Backblaze is 70$/year for unlimited data.

That's why I'm saving my computer as my one thing. ;)

But what about your gaming computer.

I guess grabbing the fire safe would be a waste of an item, but that’s where I keep all the stuff that needs to survive a fire…

…so maybe a bottle of water from the fridge? For me; not the fire.

[-] FollyDolly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Been there, done that. House caught on fire due to a fauly wood stove. We got our cats out, everything else could be replaced.

What about your giant purple dildo?!

[-] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

At this point it's basically part of myself, inseparable, so does that still count?

[-] PopcornPrincess@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I hope that's not about any person anymore and everyone is saved now. Now the one thing I'd save will probably be my diary w That has everything from my financial planning to everything i need to do for next 15 years to the passwords of my google and other accounts.

In the last few years, I've realised that there's nothing can matters more than your family and the people close to you (tho my relationship with my family especially my parents/or just my dad has been awful and terribly uncomfortable). It can at a time get to the point where you think that anything would matter more than these guys (ur parents) and although you sometimes feel like what they do for you is just so much and the next day u forget that. But it does get to a state where you're accepting that you're parents are humans, just like you, not superheroes. So it really helps having some empathy and putting yourself in their situations considering their life is no less significant than anyone's including you. sorry for including my traumatic experience and recovery in a fricking simple question's answer

How come nobody said passport?

[-] HumbertTetere@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

I'll have a much easier time replacing a passport compared to various certifications, people regularly lose their passport and there is a cost associated of 60 Euros.

[-] LouNeko@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The last time I lost my drivers license, I had to provide a passport, and the last time I lost my passport, I had to provide a drivers license or travel passport. I dont think it's that easy if you have 0 authentication of your person left.
