Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

Calixto García Íñiguez, born on this day in 1836, was a general in three separate Cuban uprisings for independence - the Ten Years' War, the Little War, and the War of 1895, which bled into the Spanish-American War.

García joined the Ten Years' War at the age of 18. Five years later, when surrounded by Spanish troops, he shot himself under the chin with a .45 caliber pistol to not give them the satisfaction of capturing him. Although the bullet went out of his forehead and knocked him unconscious, he survived. The wound left a great scar and gave him headaches for the rest of his life.

García played a key role in the ultimately successful War of 1895 and protested the subsequent lack of Cuban autonomy in the conclusion of the war (no Cuban was allowed to sign the terms of surrender and the Spanish leaders in Cuba were allowed to keep their posts in Santiago).

After American military commander William Shafter excluded Cubans from negotiations for the surrender of Santiago, declined to invite García to the surrender ceremonies, and let Spanish authorities remain in control of Santiago until the U.S. could establish a military government, García resigned from the rebel army in protest on July 17th, 1898.

García died of pneumonia on December 11th, 1898 while on a diplomatic mission in Washington, D.C. Today, his portrait is on the 50 Cuban peso banknote.

I feel like there's an argument to be made against diversification because every CEO has the exact same dumb ideas.

I'm going to re-translate the Ragnarok Prophecy from the Edda. Since I don't speak old Norse I'm going to wing it and do a vibe based translation. I'll be glossing "Whoredom Rife" as "removed is served" and neither man nor god can stop me.

My review of the Deadpool movie series: I am genuinely 50/50 on whether I ever saw the second one. Like, I've been looking at the list of actors and some clips, and still have no idea. If there was a device that measured slop, it would be calibrated using these movies.

When I came off of the high [? Not sure I felt it that much] from the gummy I had yesterday I felt almost worse anxiety than before I took it. I did end up sleeping better, not sure if I was just dead tired from not sleeping the previous night.

When I woke up I started to feel a bit of anxiety again, but after just calming myself I've felt better. The gummy worked OK, but eh, fuck that. Not gonna have the rest.

Might go out to a bar after work for a bit and see what happens. Not going to drink much, but just sit around and see how it goes.

one piecejust hitting me how well the story is setting up to bookend the relationship between Luffy and Koby after this chapter

If Koby really is like one of the final obstacles between Luffy and the One Piece alongside Blackbeard and Imu it’s kino absolute-cinema

Either that or he truly sinks into his foil position as Garp was to Roger in which case still kino absolute-cinema

I've slept like shit for two days now, waking up numerous times during the night moaning and upset and felt like shit during the day. Popped the data card from the CPAP machine in to my computer. Nothing. No difference from any daay in the last six months. WTF is going on then?

One of my favourite games of all time - Risen - is 75% off on Steam. It's a spiritual successor to the Gothic games, made by the same team. Gothic I and II are cult classics and also worth playing but this one is the most polished of their games. I played it recently and it still holds up.
