I've seen both these anime (Strawberry Marshmallow and Asobi Asobase) and I always liked these two characters, cause I can kinda see myself in them in sort of a reverse and less exaggerated way. I think these characters can really be seen as generally representative of the language troubles that many immigrants' children experience, like being expected to have a higher skill in a language than you really have, and what that can do to your self-esteem or your sense of identity. I think this might be a more pronounced issue for children of English-speaking immigrants than immigrants of other language backgrounds, though, just because of the prestige that English has.
