Seriously, this should be a criminal offense.

Send the CEO of this company to jail for a year for this shit, see how fast it stops

Why TF is it that if I cheat, fraud, steal, I go to jail but of a company does it it's at best a long-lasting draw out court case that ends in a settlement that costs the company a few cents on the dollar they made?

I'm so so so SO tired of this

Fuck protections for companies. If you wilfully fuck people over, if you steal or cheat, you go to jail, PERIOD. If that means you don't want to start a company anymore, good riddance. There are more than enough people who happily run companies without cheating

[–] TheAgeOfSuperboredom@lemmy.ca 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly this. My whole life I've been told that executives deserve their massive compensation because of all the high risk decisions they make. But if they ever get called out they take no responsibility. It's infuriating!

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Executive: 'my manager said so'

Manager: 'my director said so'

Director: 'my VP said so'

VP: 'the CEO said so'

CEO: 'tye management board said so'

Management board: 'it was a collective decision, so no one is to blame'

Corporate unaccountability at its finest.

[–] solarvector@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

Generally each step morphs slightly:

  1. my boss told me to!
  2. I told them to do it safely! (The thing that can't be done safely)
  3. I told them to solve the problem! (The problem caused by corporate policy)
  4. I told them to meet the quarterly goals! (Goals that are only possible by breaking laws and or official policy)
  5. I set the competitive strategy! I have a fiduciary duty to shareholders! (I'm morally justified in only prioritizing profits)
  6. .... profit
[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

Oh, you're missing the most important part of the meta:

CEO: We just did that the consulting company told us

Consulting company: We just make recommendations

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

So what if, and hear me out on this one, we throw ALL of them in jail, then? If you did it, you're guilty.

Do that 5 times and all of the sudden watch all corporations start behaving themselves like there is no tomorrow

[–] ShouldIHaveFun@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

I think we should also introduce death penalty for companies. Did a company commit a serious enough crime ? Then we just kill it. Is does not deserve to exist anymore.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

This this this this this. Corporations are people when their "speech" needs to be protected via campaign bribery, but not when they kill people in the name of profit. Fuck. That. Shit.

[–] AbsoluteChicagoDog@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago

Better yet make it a public entity or employee owned

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Why punish the company when it was the people inside the company that did the wrong thing? Punish the people and let another batch fix it.

[–] ShouldIHaveFun@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

If you kill the company you do punish those people by killing their main revenue/asset. The good thing is that you also punish the investors who will lose all their money. This will dissuade anybody to invest into a company if there is a possibility that the company is fraudulent. This could even push more transparency in the companies to attract investors.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Agreed, though then you could end up making a huge amount of people jobless for the actions if a tiny few people.

Better just jail the seniors at the top, it'll be a nice reminder for the replacement C suite

[–] ShouldIHaveFun@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

You end up making a huge amount of people jobless, including the C suite, and investors moneyless.

It'll be a nice reminder for everybody, and everybody will be very picky about which company they work for / invest in. Maybe leading to more transparency in companies so that they can prove that they don't commit fraud / crimes.

Too many companies have so much money/power that their crimes have much worse consequences than making people jobless.

Take a look at the other comments. The other side of the bottle states it helps reduce the amount of plastic required on the inside bottle by 50%, while making things easier to recycle.

Unfortunately that detail doesnt fit on one side, the only side the imager taker chose to show.

[–] CafecitoHippo@lemm.ee 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah I did some digging and it seems well-intended but its just done really poorly and misleading. From what I can tell, because of the paper outer protective layer, they were able to use a lighter plastic layer on the inside layer reducing the amount of plastic used. If not for the plastic on the inside, I don't know how you'd really keep the bottle from disintegrating from all the liquid inside.

I do think that they were lying about not seeing how people could misinterpret what they thought they were saying with the bottle. Obviously some people are going to look at something saying "This is a paper bottle" and think that means the whole bottle is paper. I would've assumed some sort of chemical/hydrophobic coating on the inside which might not be great for the environment either. But them saying they didn't expect people to misinterpret it is dumb.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If not for the plastic on the inside, I don’t know how you’d really keep the bottle from disintegrating from all the liquid inside.

Wax?

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How about a ceramic or glass one that you refill?

The refills themselves can also be a glass bottle that you fill at the store or something

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Sure, but that increases weight and cost. It's certainly an option though.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I've always thought about this. If there was a like a soda machine, with shampoo, dish soap, etc I could refill at, I'd definitely use it.

Yeah, that would be rad. Some stores do that for water and peanut butter and whatnot, but I haven't seen soap.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Not if you keep using the same bottle for refills, that's the entire point

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure, but how much does that actually happen?

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

Almost never because it's not a thing

If government outs rules to make it a thing it'll. Happen everywhere

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Omission of details in this image can be slightly misleading. However branding the container as “Paperbottle” is much more misleading by an order of magnitude.

Product labeling is almost pointless. Especially if it can be missed by a photographer.

Neither is right, but one is definitely more wrong

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yea I do agree. Companies that really want to make things better just need to sell bulk refills. Plastic use goes way down the larger the container (to a point based on weight). In-store refills are of course the best, but lots more challenges there.

[–] Phineaz@feddit.org 92 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Not sure if this is appropriate to this example, but these paper/cardboard wrappings can save on plastic: The inner container can be made thinner and is generally easier to recycle, as there is no need for printability or pretty finishes (not saying that they are being recycled, but they could).

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 57 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If the bottle label wasn't intentionally mislieading it wouldn't be a good example of greenwashing.

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 70 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The box that the bottle comes in is clearly labeled with steps how to take the paper casing off to recycle. It is even precut to separate that way. The company claimed at the time to have reduced its plastic by 50% this way.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Besides, how would an all-paper bottle even work? Liquid soap is, well, liquid. Paper soaks through when it's in contact with a liquid. The only other way to do such a bottle would be to use coated paper, which is less recyclable than an inner plastic bottle.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 30 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

Wax. Waxed cardboard is recyclable. And biodegradable. Only reason wax paper is generally not considered recyclable is because it's mostly used for food, where it gets contaiminated.

[–] Theatomictruth@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Whenever I try to recycle waxed cardboard boxes the garbage men pull them out and toss them in my yard.

[–] kamenlady@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I see, the garbage man charm is a global thing. People in the house where i live overfill the bin, every time. The garbage men just throw everything above the lid on the floor, every time.

Can't fault them for this though. The ones that overfill the bin couldn't care less and even step over their own trash, to throw new trash in the bin. Other neighbors end up putting their overfilled trash from last week in the bin.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Jesus! I could stuff a hog's carcass in my overflowing can and they would just dump it and go. They mainly seem to care about car batteries and tires, everything else, fuck it, send it.

We have two competing garbage companies, and they do indeed compete. Score one for capitalism working as intended. OTOH, that's a lot of wasted gas running by my house several times a week.

I'm with the "cool" company. The CEO shoots straight when he emails us. "Those other assholes are cheating! Here's what went down at the city council meeting (with proof). Can you believe this shit?!"

I don't think mine even care about car batteries and tires. If the truck arm can lift it, in it goes. I feel bad for saying it, but I've thrown random stuff in there, like rocks and broken down furniture because I was too lazy to make a dump run. Still haven't seen them ever reject anything.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I am aware of waxed cardboard. I dismissed it because I thought that relying solely on it to store a liquid sounded a bit too ambitious. But it might work so yeah, I should have considered it.

Is waxed cardboard recyclable?

[–] AlbertSpangler@lemmings.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Even better to my mind. I so love shit that turns back into dirt, like literal shit.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You don't have milk cartons in your country? Come to think of it, I'm not sure the US does any longer. OJ and other drinks can still be had in cartons.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

We absolutely do. The paper is plastic-layered, which is how beverage cartons generally work.

This product is called 'paper bottle' to make it easier to explain the role of paper labels wrapping outside of the bottle," a spokesperson for Innisfree said.

"However we understand that the entire container can be seen as paper material because of the product name. We are deeply sorry for the confusion caused and will try to deliver more accurate information to you."

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 60 points 3 weeks ago

This is Olympic-tier doublespeak. Fuck this company.

[–] Flamangoman@leminal.space 32 points 3 weeks ago

Some scooby doo shit right there

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago

Look... just make it out of plastic! This actually only makes the problem worse. If you want to recycle, it makes it MUCH harder since they need to remove the outer paper cover. Both cannot be together in a recycling plant.
