Have they? What I’ve seen is people over ~~50~~ 60 (really 65) have zero idea that AI exists and consistently fall for obviously absurd Facebook posts.

Edit, I see where some of these responses came from - OP said over 60, and I meant to say over 60 too, not 50.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 6 points 2 months ago

I saw a "veteran" crying in a wheelchair with 13 fingers and the comments were just elderly people saying amen. They have no idea that AI even exists as a context

[–] libra00@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

In 52 and use ai to help me worldbuild and structure my writing projects every day, generate character portraits for my characters in tabletop rpga, etc, and I very much doubt I'm alone.

[–] zeppo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sure... OP said over 60, but I think over 65-70 would be more accurate for people who don't know about generative AI at all.

[–] libra00@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, but the person I replied to said over 50, which is why I replied to them and not to OP.

people over 50 have zero idea that AI exists

[–] zeppo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That was me. It was a typo. Sorry

[–] libra00@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ahh, my bad then. Though one day soon I will also be over 60 and be pretty aware of AI.. :P

[–] zeppo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The people who believe a kid in Africa made a working automobile from balloons and that boats are pulling whales from the water and cleaning off thousands of barnacles will be 75-80 then.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Eh.... I'm 51. Been using AI for about 5 years now. Not only don't I fall for the pictures, but I can also identify when my prompts are poisoning my responses (a great skill for Google, too). My wife has used it. Her boss is at least aware of it. I'm strongly encouraged to use it at work.

I might be a bit of an outlier, but plenty of us olds know all about AI from the pixels and having seen quite a few prompts in our day.

[–] zeppo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I'm almost that age, and am technically adept also. I'd say the "old people on Facebook" age is a good bit higher. I'm sure some people who are 65 or 70 understand what AI is too.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Mate, gen-X were basically the first people regularly use the Internet. They're far more clued up than Gen-Z.

[–] zeppo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Yes, I meant to say 60 or 65 like OP did. Funny thing is I’m about 50.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I guess I've only 2 reports I'm going off of. My own parents and the parents of a popular streamer. Maybe should have asked for more examples instead?

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So 2 is now all people over 60?

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world -4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'm just connecting dots. I already accept it prob should have phrased abother queston but seems me asking a question at all is some how offensenive I'll just let it be.

[–] zeppo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I haven't really heard anyone over 65 or whatever espouse the dead internet theory. Could be a trend I don't know about, I guess.

[–] leadore@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

Why would someone of any age instantly cling to the narrative that people over 60 instantly clung to the narrative that everything on the internet is likely AI? Or believe that all or most people in any particular age group think the same way? Basing a belief around a set of people based on their age or gender or race is lazy thinking and any conclusions based on that will likely be wrong.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Outside of discussions about the Dead Internet Theory I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone express this.

[–] libra00@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I've definitely felt it in the past 5÷ years, even if it isn't talked about much. I've been adding 'reddit' to my searches to avoid that endless sea of identically formatted articles that are clearly created by ai to maximize traffic, many science youtube videos are just obviously low-effort ai slop.

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

What bullshit. I'm over 60 and no one I know thinks this way. Remember, we're folks why grew up before the internet, saw it come about, (saw the enshitification of it), and saw AI content surge. We know that the AI content is relatively recent. This makes no sense

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (3 children)

No really! Just yesterday I heard my 75yo relative say her whole Facebook feed is “just all AI.” We didn’t really explore the topic, though.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago

They might not be wrong. That's what happens when zuck pushes random bullshit into your feed. I left FB years ago because there was more random shit pushed into my feed than content from people I actually cared about.

[–] smeg@infosec.pub 2 points 2 months ago

There's your answer: they're all primarily Facebook users only. Facebook is mostly AI garbage, besides private groups.

[–] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 1 points 1 month ago

It probably is.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Obviously because everyone outside of your particular generation is a hivemind that shares a single un-nuanced thought on every topic.

[–] nesc@lemmy.cafe 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Everything on the internet is likely ai generated.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Everything? First hand accounts of the trump administration? First hand accounts of highly publicized people? All cute animal videos? Etc. Etc.

[–] Whitebrow@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

First hand, second hand, third hand, and the extra fingers too.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)
[–] Whitebrow@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm sorry, but as an AI language model, I don't have the ability to recall specific personal data or information about individuals.

Ok but I'm watching you.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Negative. I am a meat popsicle.

[–] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 2 points 1 month ago

Solid Fifth Element reference.

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well yes, you can generate all of those using AI.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Were talking about probability

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ackshally, nerds do be fucking

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What's the probability of that?

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)
[–] dumbass@leminal.space 1 points 1 month ago

I like them odds.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How come you instantly believe this narrative?

[–] feddit-admin@feddit.online 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I just got dumber reading that.

They’re out of touch
