4 and a half minutes, or 5 and a half with the minute long title intro, into this and i'm already getting heavy vibes just from this screen cap that I'm going to want to chuck the writer, and everyone who signed off on this into the sun.

this is one of those episodes of trek where you're left wondering if you actually watched star trek at all; trip was right, that being was clearly, forcefully subjugated and archer was wrong for chastising trip for helping.

later on in enterprise's run, when the maco's were portrayed as good guys and the cartoonishly evil reptilian and insectoid xindi's became a thing, it became clear that 9/11 had an impact on enterprise and i that's when i took a break from star trek.

i've taking the same break from the new section 31 movie and for similar reasons. i'll still watch it like i watched the rest of enterprise years later; it's just that it's so clearly anti-humanist and filled with american jingoism that it's hard to accept that has anything to do with star trek.

you don't have to be brand loyal just because it says star trek on it. kurtzman trek isn't going to be better or have more literary value in 10 years.

the videogames and x-men crossovers are a better use of your time.

it's not about brand loyalty; it's about wanting to believe in and enjoy story telling that take place an egalitarian and just future for humanity.

i got to witness, first hand, as parts of the fandom shut itself off to various iterations of the series because of the updates it has gone through throughout the decades and i felt sorry for them as they missed out on new story telling because of it; robbing themselves of the experience.

i'm determined not to become ossified like them as i go through middle age and i know that even really bad star trek stories, like the 5th movie, have exceptional and worthwhile nuggets of story telling or character development within them.

ok i want that too, but I didn't see evidence of it coming from kurtzman and the only leverage we have is not buying bad products.

Star Trek is very much a product of Hollywood despite it's aspirational content and subject to the same profit driven motives that demand perpetual growth; in the past, it was berman that Hollywood believed could increase Star Trek's growth and now it's kurtzman, for better or worse.

I intend to watch either way (just not right away if it's seems in poor taste) and in the hopes that the clearly better talent, matalas, has a chance to shine like the last time the clearly better talent did during the previous tenure did, w behr and deep space nine.

There's a slight problem here, this is an ENT Prime Directive episode, which considering the track record for PD episodes post TNG (which even TNG has some stinker PD episodes I would add), so this is entirely on brand by this point. Especially if you take a look at the other ~~notable~~ notorious PD episode ENT has, Dear Doctor.

Like if you go look up the scene of Archer chastising Trip in this episode, you'll find a bunch of comments about "This is why the Prime Directive exists" with zero critical thought whatsoever.

it was almost par for the course; the difference is that the other personal development episodes didn't re-enforce an clearly discriminatory social hierarchy like this one did.

Shoutout to Enterprise having an evil alien race called the "Suliban"
